[JO1] AERA dot 201126

“JO1’s driving force is JAM’s power. The reasons to give everything and to aim for GO TO THE TOP”

The members are all Japanese, but all songs and choreographies are made by Koreans. That’s why they are called a “J-Pop and K-Pop hybrid” or “JK-Pop”.
Shion: Only the lyrics are Japanese, but the rest is quite K-Pop? The music and the rhythm, and putting the focus on that you align everyone in dancing is also different from Japan.
Sukai: Also our vocal training is done with Koreans by being remotely connected to them. They listen to our songs, and I realized that the way of singing became a bit like a Korean would sing in Japanese. Sometimes when we sing the pronunciation of our Japanese is corrected to a “Korean like Japanese” -laughs-
Issei: Also in this aspect, isn’t it a new generation of music that hasn’t existed before? It feels like Reiwa.
TN: Reiwa = the era name of the current Japanese emperor who took the throne in 2019

JO1’s fans are called JAM, made of the initials of “JO1 AND ME”.
Ruki: We are a group born from the votes of the viewers. We could make our dreams come true thanks to the support of our fans, and also that we are doing various activities is thanks to all JAM. JAM’s power is our driving motor and strong point.
Sukai: A big family is also strong, isn’t it? Even in dancing It has an impact whether 3 people or 11 people are doing the same thing, and when 11 people put their voices into one song, various chemical reactions occur. I think that’s interesting.
Shion: Everything is different about the 11 of us. Face, personality, strong points and way of thinking. That’s why I think everyone can find a member who is their type. Another strength might be our speed of changing. During play time we fool around and during practise time we practise. The role of rounding everything up has Sho.
Sho: Again, I’m the leader -laughs- it’s not just rounding up the practise, I try to tell the members “let’s do the common sense things properly.” Let’s do the greetings orderly, let’s pack the luggage neatly, let’s sit down on the toilet -laughs- In the aspect of performances, Ren is the commander. He also gives instructions during stage rehearsals or MV Shootings.
Takumi: Ren and Mame are also our dance teachers. When the choreography videos are sent to us from Korea, they will memorise this and make it our own. Mame also used to teach children, and Ren teaches us carefully. Normally, if you requested Ren’s lessons, they would be super expensive. That we get that for free, feels luxurious, doesn’t it?
Ren: I was originally a back dancer and compared to the others around me, I used to stand on stage quite often. Exactly that’s why there are also things that are visible to me. Moreover, I want to do choreographies, stage productions and producing, so if you think of it as a part of your training, you get something back even when it’s free.

What is something important in doing your work?
Issei: Giving everything. I think that it’s the best to tackle every job with the best you can do in the moment and all your power.
Ren: On the contrary, I don’t think it’s right to just do it frantically. Sometimes it’s better to take a step back and take a look around, and it’s okay to have a time to take a pause. If there is a wall, it’s okay to overcome it, take a detour or open a hole. I want to have such a flexible mind.
Syoya: Gandhi also said that life isn’t just about raising the speed -laughs- That we enjoy ourselves (is important). Because if I’m not excited, then the audience might not enjoy themselves.
Junki: I also enjoy the things I’m working hard on. Working hard on the things I enjoy. I think it’s the same for working in any field.

The goal of “until the waist bends” (= until they are old)
Keigo: To like the people you are working with. I used to see only the bad sides of people, but recently I keep in mind to like the other person, look for their good points and praise them. I like this one first, and the other person might like this one too. If you hate work, it's over, absolutely.

As a group, one goal is to stand on the Dome stages.
Shosei: I want to make it come true to stand on Dome stages. When we do our greeting, we add “GO TO THE TOP” before our group name, but when we reach the top I want to change it to “GOT TO THE TOP”.
Issei: I also want to stand on big stages like Domes or Arenas. I want to know how the scenery looks like from there.
Syoya: Can I say something personal? JO1’s song production. Also, I want to try to manage a bar or a work related to fashion.
Shion: That’s alright. It’s good I think. I want to live happily all the time. Happiness is truly JO1. Continuing the days like now, and when I’m in my late 30s, I want to look back while drinking alcohol and say “ah I did that during Corona times”. Isn’t that usually something nice?
Junki: That’s nice. I want to perform with everyone when I’m 30 years old, 40 years old no, also when I’m 70 years old.
Syoya: Even when you are only half as good as you are now?
Junki: If everyone is uniform, it should be okay. If our waists are bend, everyone might be the same height -laughs-
