[ORβIT] TV Guide Alpha 211130

ORβIT x World

ORβIT is a Japanese-Korean group formed by 7 members who are overflowing with talents. Believing into a brightly shining future, they came together and now they are joining their hands across the sea to deepen their bonds. Bringing ideas together, reflecting the joy of what they have made themselves and the journey of moving forward as one. This beautiful orbit will surely lead them to the World.

Since their formation the Japanese-Korean group ORβIT was separated during their activities due to the Corona pandemic, but finally they reached their “complete state” and released their 2nd mini album “Alter Ego”. With creativity and performances as their weapon their aim for the World.

It’s the first appearance of the group. Please tell us what each member thinks are strengths of the group called ORβIT.
Heecho: When I thought about what could be the strengths of ORβIT, I asked the dancers and lyrics writers around us about that. They replied “I think it’s your mysterious side”. Because there are a lot of groups, it’s difficult to separate yourself from them, but I think our strength is also that there is our opinion in everything. Our views are reflected in the songs, in the dancing, in the costumes, in the album design and logo, and the members are also editing the footage.
Yoondong: Because we are a group in which all members truly love music, I think our strength is that we have a unified will. Also, we are 7 members with great dancing, singing and faces (laughs).
Younghoon: We are a group with a strong individuality and where each member has his own strengths. We are teaching, we are teached and I think our charm is also that our aura is like the ones of friends or family.
Shunya: By listening to the demos everyone decides on the selection of the songs, so the members’ colours appear in all all works. I think this leads to ORβIT’s unique world view.
June: I think, too, that we are a group in which our songs themselves are a weapon. I feel they can be well received both by people who listen to J-Pop and by people who listen to K-Pop. Our voices are also unique which is especially noticeable in ballads in my opinion.
Tomo: One of our strengths is also that you can see our growth on the creative side because I also write lyrics, Shunya designs goods and June makes the raps.
Yugo: That we are a group that has a unique colour and musicality. Our mysteriousness is fickle… normally we are noisy, so this gap is also a charm I think (laughs)

Please introduce the member next to you.
Heecho: Next to me is the kind oldest brother Younghoon. Normally he fools around, but on stage he does everything diligently.
Younghoon: Yugo is very passionate about work and I think he is the member who runs to grasp his dreams with everything he has. He is younger than me, but there is a lot I learn from him. He is my muse!
Yugo: Thank you very much (laughs) To make it short, Yoondong-san is someone kind. He praises my expressions during the practises for the live. I was very happy and I wanted to work even harder on the dancing and everything else. He is my older brother who always cares for me. There is a lot I admire about him, so I will continue to often watch Yoondong-san and learn from him to become a better man.
Tomo: What do you want to learn the most from him?
Yugo: I want to copy how he carries luggage!
Tomo: Great! (laughs)
Heecho: But Yoondong is no errand-boy!
Yoondong: June can speak English, Japanese and Korean and he is a member with amazing language abilities.
Heecho: However his Korean is not as good as I thought it would be (laughs). Out of the members he comes from the best university. He is someone smart and a hard worker behind the scenes, but he doesn’t show it.
June: Shunya is serious. I’m also someone serious, but I think Shunya has a weird seriousness.
Tomo: A weird seriousness, is that even serious? (laughs)
June: He is serious regarding work, but often he can be too much (laughs).
Heecho: He has a soft heart, and because he is an AB-type, he might have a dual personality. In the MBTI personality test which is popular in Korea right now, he got the same type as president Obama. He is also a very kind person.
TN: According to Google, Obama, and hence Shunya, is an ENTP
Younghoon: Also, he often drinks cider.
Heecho: In movies or animes, geniuses often drink and eat sweet things, right? I think that’s what he is longing for.
Shunya: Tomo might be the one who I felt has the biggest gap since our activities started. At first, my image was that he was someone tough, but as he opened up himself I understood that he is like a young boy with a playful heart. He is someone friendly and he always fools around.
Heecho: From my Korean point of view, his Japanese is the best. He is funny and has a talent for comedy.
Tomo: Please stop (laughs). Heecho-san is also the leader and someone who works for the group when we are resting. He thinks of ORβIT 24/7.
Heecho: Gimme a break~
Tomo: He messages the staff regarding the choreography and performing, and he is someone always working. Also, I don’t know whether the fans know it, but Heecho is actually really funny.
Heecho: …. I don't mind to work a lot because I get praised.
Tomo: Look, it’s funny how you whispered that!

In Korea you seem to live separated in 3 groups. I would like to ask you about how it is to live together?
Heecho: I’m living with Yugo and June, but once the members gathered at my place and we watched the popular drama “Squid Game” together. Shunya is not good with grotesque things, so I think he doesn’t really know the plot.
Shunya: No, it’s not like that! But it’s scary when there is a lot of blood…
Heecho: He was scared but managed to watch it until the end.
Younghoon: He was the most scared.
Heecho: However it was the episode that made me realise how cute Shunya surprisingly is (laughs).
Younghoon: I’m living together with Tomo, but I always forget to dry my clothes after washing them. A weird smell ends up appearing and I have to run the washing machine again (laughs).
Tomo: It would be good if I noticed that, but I’m the same (laughs).
Yoondong: I’m living with Shunya and I was surprised that he can eat spicy things.
Tomo: Shunya’s stomach and guts are strong!
Shunya: After coming here I got used to it. Spicy Korean dishes are just not spicy but also very delicious, aren’t they? Yoondong-san helped me a lot because he paid attention. Just like I forget to turn on the washing machine, leave the house and when I come back (I think) it has finished.
June: You forgot to turn on the washing machine before hanging the clothes (laughs)
Shunya: That’s right. That’s why I’m worried he will be upset one day (laughs)
Yoondong: When are you going to do it~! (laughs) But Shunya throws away the trash, right?
Shunya: …. That’s how we get along (laughs)
Yugo: We communicate each day and with our life in Korea we deepen our bonds, right? We don’t think of it as something to expect, but I want to be active while feeling gratitude.
Heecho: The Japanese members also started to understand Korean and I feel a little relieved.
Tomo: I can understand a bit of what is said, but talking (in Korean) is still difficult…
June: Even when you don’t understand it, you say “Nee” (yes in Korean), don’t you?
Shunya: That’s how we survive (laughs)

What is your favourite song from the mini album “Alter Ego”?
Yoondong: I like the intro, the bridge and the chorus of the title track “Eclipse”.
Shunya: We decided on the songs while exchanging our opinions, so I have confidence in all songs. Among them, there is the pop and cheerful song “Hana” which was already in the works when we prepared the album “OO” and I was the one who actively approached everyone and said that I wanted to do that song. It’s a type of song I never imagined doing with ORβIT, so I was happy that it was included. It seems like a song that will be important to us and our fans.
June: It’s a song that can make everyone excited at a live, right? The song that I wanted to do is “Shady”. The lyrics are related to the meaning of the album title and the lyrics are in relation to the term “different personality”. You don’t know yourself that you have a dual personality, but the other person does… like this. I think it would be interesting for the fans to take a deeper look into it. I like the melody of the song and the balance of singing and rapping is good.
Heecho: I personally prefer ballads over dance tracks, hence if I had to choose one song, it would be “With”.
Younghoon: I like “With” too. The lyrics that Tomo wrote are really good.
Yugo: My favourite song is also “With”. Tomo also wrote the lyrics for “Showersnow” of “OO”, but I like that it takes a different perspective on the snow of the same winter.
Tomo: I'm glad to hear you saying this because I wrote the lyrics so that people can feel my personality while not having the same perception of snow. Since it was decided that the 7 of us would come together, I changed the contents of the lyrics. Yugo also added his feelings for the members into the lyrics of “Forever” which you wrote, right?
Yugo: When I couldn’t sleep, I opened the window and while thinking of the seasons and times that have passed until now and what is coming, I wrote those lyrics. I think it has become a text that not only the fans but also people who don’t know us can relate to.
June: When I’m writing the rap parts, I’m adding what I’m thinking and when I’m writing the whole lyrics like I did for “Shady”, I’m thinking of it like the story of a movie. Starting by deciding on the title, the concept and the theme from the start, I write the lyrics.

Before you were separated in Japan and Korea and worked, but this time the production happened while the 7 of you were together. Were there huge differences in how you communicate and such?
Yoondong: The recordings before were also separately, so I was the most happy that we were able to prepare while talking together.
Younghoon: We were together, we could talk directly with each other and say our opinions, so a lot of things were quickly decided.
Yoondong: In addition, June taught me about the details of the Japanese lyrics and gave me advice on the pronunciation.
June: Actually, normally we talk in Japanese. But when we talk deeply and seriously, it is in Korean. When there are only the members, I end up interpreting, but among the staff members there are also people who can speak both languages, so it’s no problem at all.
Shunya: One year has passed since we made our debut and finally we were able to talk together about creating music, MV shootings and lives, and I felt this is our true form. Heecho-san directs the recording and he teaches the members a lot also regarding dancing. When we practised in Japan, I tried to figure out where I was putting too much energy into, but thanks to his advice regarding where and how to align our performances I was able to learn a lot about how to show myself.
Yugo: I also put too much power into dancing, so I also got advice from him. I’m also thankful that the big brothers gave me specific advice, such as here it would be good to sing like this.
Tomo: I’m bad at communicating via text, so it was really good to be able to discuss while seeing the facial expression of the other one. My strength is R&B, but this time there were a lot of songs that didn’t apply to me. I challenged various music genres while receiving advice and by singing difficult songs like “Forever” or “With” I think I was able to grow as a vocalist.
Heecho: In the end it’s smoother to make an album and discuss the live performances while seeing each other’s faces. I think the fans will also be delighted with the environment that the 7 of us were able to create together and I also think that it is an album that will be attractive to people who don’t know about this situation. We did everything we could, so it’s time to let go and in my mind I switched to the preparations of the next album already.

Please tell us of your future dreams as a Japanese-Korean group with a global perspective.
Tomo: Due to the influence of covid, frightening times continue, but now we just have to work hard on what we have to do and what we can do. That we were able to show us 7 being together made us happy and I hope to communicate and be active in order to make EαRTH happy.
Shunya: There are members who can speak both Japanese and Korean and Jun can also speak English, so I want to work hard to be able to go out into the world. I hope we grow into a group that can make the most of each one’s specialities.
June: Since coming here, I started thinking that I have to learn more Korean and learn English properly… ORβIT is a group in which each member’s individuality is strong and everyone can do many things in their own way. The image is that the group is the place where everyone can do what they want and come together in the end. Also we can work hard thanks to the support of EαRTH, so I would like to express my gratitude to them.
Yoondong: I didn’t expect to be active with people from a different country, but everyone is kind and besides cultural differences we get along while working. I want to keep this good atmosphere going forever.
Younghoon: It’s the same for me. I would like to work with them not just as colleagues with whom I happen to work together, instead I would like to maintain this relationship as normal friends who talk about singing, dancing and being on stage. This is my dream.
Yugo: I hope that we can continue to create an environment where we, whose individuality is strong, can be just like who we are.
Heecho: I don’t have dreams. That’s because for example, the ceiling could collapse while I’m talking about this, or the car could have an accident on the way home. Hence, I don’t look into the future, and it’s important just to enjoy the present as much as you can and do your best. To be honest, I have no idea how being a Japanese-Korean group will affect our future activities. After all, what we want to do is music and since I was a child I was taught that countries and languages do not matter when it comes to music.I want to enjoy the present and continue our activities with maximum effort.

[OWV/JO1] Honda Kosuke about Kawashiri Ren in PDJ S1

[JO1] Starlight Deluxe Behind Interview

Q: What did you think when you were entrusted with the "Space etiquette room"?
Ren: Space etiquette... I had no idea about it, so I could only imagine it back then and I was not sure what I should do but it was the corner I did with Takumi together, so while we discussed 'Isn't this good?' 'Isn't this better?' we managed to do it with a lot of fun.

Q: You created the "Space etiquette room" immediately, but where did you get the inspiration for it?
Ren: We were both dressed in costumes of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, so we decided on the concept that incorporated that kind of easily recognisable movements, and created this together.
Takumi: It was the first time for me, too, to express thank you, I'm sorry and so on with my body, so it was very difficult but... but when I tried it, It seemed it had been fun and was incredibly well received, so I think we were able to do it in a very fun atmosphere. Well... Well... like this? (shy smile and does the neck movement of the dance)

Why did they wear each other's can badges at Open The Door?

Their first impression of each other

Letters they made for the program:

To the JAM who always support us,

How are you? Did you eat well? Are you not sick?
Thank you so much for always caring and looking out for me. Thanks to JAM, me and the members can enjoy our activities.
It’s been a while since I wrote a letter like this and it’s a little embarrassing, but when I write in my own handwriting, I feel like I'm more in touch with my feelings, or that I'm trying to deliver them properly, so I, the one who wrote it, is also happy. Because one who receives this will surely be happy, too, so I’m waiting for your reply. I’m writing this letter at an enjoyable schedule, but that I can write a letter at such an enjoyable schedule is thanks to you who always cheers for me. The members often say this, too, and we all feel that we can’t thank you enough. But we have a lot of gratitude and want to give back, so let me deliver that to you. Please continue to be at my side. Love you.

From Kawashiri Ren

How are you doing?
The winter has come and it is the season when the cold settles into your body. I feel some sadness seeing the leaves fall from the elegant trees. In the midst of this, I suddenly had a thought. It was when I was driving on the highway. When I opened the window and let the wind blow, I happened to see a magnificent building. At this moment I was deeply moved by the fact that we humans build that.
It might be something obvious, but the roads we walk on, the houses we live in, the buildings we look up to, everything was made by humans. I realized that we should not forget that our lives are made possible by someone else while we go on with our daily lives without thinking about anything.
I’m so thankful to the people who work outside even while I’m sleeping. Thank you very much.
In one’s life there might be more dreadful things, but I’m hoping that everyone can spend each day happily and joyfully. I will introduce you to something that might relax your heart a bit.
It’s the single “WANDERING” that was released on December 15. There are a lot of songs that are perfect for this season, so please listen to it if you like to. Please continue to support us. Please take care of yourself.

Kawanishi Takumi

https://www.tfm.co.jp/post/index.php?catid=3595&itemid=183828

This time Kawashiri Ren and Kawanishi Takumi came to visit us. It was the first visit of JO1 since September 2020 when Kono Junki and Kimata Syoya visited us.

Uga: I think your year was busy, so what kind of year was it for JO1?
Ren: We did new jobs and were able to have various experiences… When we are active, we don’t know what is going on, the time just passes, but when looking back now, I think it might have been a year of growth for us, with only useful things happening.

Koyama: Based on this, how would you express this year in one word?
Ren:… Can I have 2 weeks (to think about this)?
Koyama & Uga: (laugh)
Takumi: For me it’s “eye”. The “eye”, just like the eye of a Taifun. Because it was a year that was spent as if we were in the eye of a taifun.
Koyama: Not the “台” (podium) of the Taifun, but the eye, right?
Ren: For me it’s “meeting”. In November we had our first live performances with audiences and it was the first time since we made our debut that we were able to directly meet JAM on stage. This was very memorable.

Uga: Right when you made your debut Covid came… like this right?
Ren: Our activities started with our debut single release event being cancelled.
Uga: It’s the thing you longed for, isn’t it? How was it? To meet (the fans) for real?
Ren: It was a lot of fun.
Takumi: It was fun. We sang and there were also the fans who cried. I was deeply moved.
Koyama: Not meeting you must have felt long for JAM, too.

Uga: The theme of this show is sending letters. Before today, we started to collect those, saying “please write a letter for these two.” Well… this much has come.
Ren & Takumi: eh!
Takumi: That’s a lot!
Uga: There was a deadline, but until now 328 ones have arrived.
Ren & Takumi: Thank you very much.

Uga: We have those, so please choose one and introduce it to us.
Koyama: Quite a lot of express letters have come, too.
Takumi: This one is cute! ‘I’m often fighting with my little sister. Do JO1 fight too? How do you reconcile afterwards? Tsubasa, 7 years old’
Uga: A 7 year old boy! His drawing is also very good!
Takumi: Thank you.

Uga: How is it? Do you fight?
Ren: After all there are conflicting opinions regarding our performances and we voice our opinions which don't go as far as fighting, but there are some.
Koyama: How do you reconcile and solve it?
Takumi: Rather than reconciling we don’t let it become bad. Because actually we say “isn’t this better?” “Isn’t that better?” in order to improve each other. We try to focus only on our good points… because it won’t get worse.
Koyama: So it’s a mutual agreement on the spot?
Uga: It’s like a debate, fighting with your opinions.
Ren: That’s right!
Takumi: From this point on I will try to conclude it. It’s important to not drag it out. But it might be difficult for the 7 year old Tsubasa-kun… (laughs)

Uga: Please share your message for Tsubasa-kun.
Takumi: I have an older brother. We used to fight, too, back then. It’s something normal I guess. But since it’s your little sister, please be kind to her.

During the broadcast Kawashiri-san and Kawanishi-san read a lot of letters. In the letters there were questions such as “Why did you wear each other’s can badges on your encore outfit at OPEN THE DOOR?” or “How do you keep your motivation during hard times?”.

Uga: Today you received a lot of letters, but until now which was the most memorable letter that you wrote or received?
Takumi: I played baseball from elementary to high school, but before my last match in high school I received my first letter from my father. “Thank you so much for the fun you have given me until now.” This letter made me really happy.
Koyama: Oh! Did you win the match?
Takumi: I lost!

Uga: How about you, Kawashiri-san?
Ren: In my case, I got a letter from Santa when I was in elementary school. We were 4 boys, and on Christmas Eve together with my mother we decided “Let’s bake cookies for Santa!” and made those. Santa could eat them when he brought the gifts. When I woke up the next day, Santa had eaten them and left a letter. In this letter he wrote “Look for___!” and we looked (for the gifts) at a lot of places and it was an entertaining Santa who came. This is something I still remember vividly.
Koyama: What was the gift?

Ren: The toy I wanted to have back then.
Uga: What a nice story.

Furthermore, Kawashiri-san and Kawanishi-san wrote a letter, addressed to “the person you want to write to right now”. Kawashiri-san wrote “to JAM who always support us” and Kawanishi-san “to the people who build buildings”… It was a letter filled with gratitude to people working.

Koyama: I expected that you two would surely write a love letter to each other (laughs)
Takumi: This would be a little embarrassing, so I couldn’t do it (laughs).
Koyama: But what you have in common is gratitude. I felt that you both always do your work while being thankful to everyone.

Uga: Do you have a goal or an ambition for next year?
Ren: The lives in November were originally planned as a tour, but due to the influence of covid we were only able to perform in Tokyo. We are thankful for this, but this is one frustrating thing, so in order to be able to see all the JAM who support us from afar, we are working hard to do so.
Takumi: I think I will be the happiest if I could spend the year happily and healthily without any injuries or illness.
Koyama: Out of the 11 JO1 members, 4 members have come so far. I hope the other 7 members will visit, too.

JO1’s Shiroiwa Ruki introducing the songs from WANDERING

JO1 continues to run at an overwhelming speed. Shiroiwa Ruki who is the center of “WANDERING” introduces each featured song.

It’s my fault that Shosei slipped up so much that the scene froze.

Bokura no kisetsu

The irretrievably frozen scene was too funny.
The message “Before the freezing winter comes, I’m coming to meet you”, of “Bokura no kisetsu” is wonderful, isn’t it?
Speaking of “freezing”, recently Shosei slipped so much that it froze (laughs).
Even when everyone is talking, he jokes in a small voice or talks about something on his own. If you secretly listen to it, you will find out that the content is quite interesting. I thought it would be a waste if not everyone can hear it, so I encouraged him, saying “It’s better to say it in a proper loud voice so that everyone can hear it.”
Maybe because of that advice, shortly after the recording of a show, he joked loudly at a timing of which I don’t get why he thought it would work! It was a surprisingly embarrassing moment!
Indeed, I encouraged him.
But the timing was clearly wrong… Out of shock the scene froze and it became irretrievable. That situation was way too funny and adorable to me! (laughs)

Kimata Syoya will talk endlessly even when no one listens.
By the way, Kimata Syoya also mumbles and always talks on his own. However, this is not to tease or to react. He does not make anyone listen, he just talks. It is just his warm-up.
That’s why I don’t tell him “Say it in a loud voice”, but Shosei thought it would be more interesting and gave him some advice. But it was a miscalculation… Because the one who encouraged him was actually me, so I feel very sorry now.

Someone please stop Keigo.

Prologue

Exactly because we stood still, I felt the gratitude for JAM from my heart.
In this song there is the phrase “to stand still”, but due to the Covid pandemic we have been in a situation where we had to stand still the whole time since our debut and I understood a lot.
First of all, standing on stage is something very precious. When we were able to have our first lives with audiences since the debut. I truly felt that so many people cheered for us and that we had to let this many people wait.
There was anxiety because the lives had to happen without the fans being able to voice anything, but when it started, just by JAM being there, the show was so much better than we imagined. We really got strength from it, too. I once more felt from my heart that JAM’s existence is our support. I always want to continue to hold JAM dearly.

Keigo often bursts out at places he should not.
By the way, a member who doesn’t stand still is (Sato) Keigo.
We live in the same house, so the car doesn’t leave until everyone is there. Hence, we return home at the same time, but if we live on our own in the future, I think he will leave the studio the second the work is over. He is faster than everyone else in preparing to return home! Because he starts to take off his costume right when the job is over. I have no clue why he rushes that much, but I guess he is just impatient.
Also, he just doesn’t stop fooling around. At the point when you think “Now!?”, he starts to fool around and acts up. Some days ago at the lives when we performed “Bokura no kisetsu” for the first time, when I tried to give a proper explanation, Keigo, who was on the other end, started to do something strange and the audience went crazy… (laughs) I can’t stop him anymore. Rather than stopping himself, he can’t be stopped.
Someone please stop Keigo (laughs)
More than that, Keigo burts out at times he should not. so it’s kinda hard. When he bursts out at the right moment, he manifests an extreme power, so it’s always a 50:50 chance. Well, it’s his good side however (laughs).

I feel that no matter how far apart we are, the members will always be together.

Never Ending Story

It was Sho-kun who looked forward the most to the show in which Junki and I appeared.
In “Never Ending Story” there is the message included that “No matter how far apart we are, our hearts are connected”. While our individual schedules increase, even if we are apart from each other, I often think we are together.
I’m especially happy that the members tell me their thoughts when a variety program airs in which I appeared.
On the day of the broadcast of “Mononoke hunt” in which I appeared together with Junki, it was our practice day. Because if we hurried home after the practice, we would be in time for the broadcast, Junki and I prepared to hurry home. When I glanced at the side, I saw that Sho-kun was more in a hurry than us, saying “Because I want to watch it for sure” and rushed more than anyone else. Hence, the three of us took a taxi and rushed back home to watch the program which was funny.

Ren-kun checks everyone’s videos.
For the KitKat web contents, we were paired up in teams of two to talk about a topic and Ren-kun diligently watched all our videos. After watching the video in which Sho-kun and I were a pair, he told me “It was very funny”. “After all we are one group”, and I felt his love for us. There are a lot of jokers in JO1, so I usually observe them and stay calm, but actually I like to fool around and tease. Thus, when I’m with Sho-kun, I can safely fool around. If I was paired up with Keigo, I would be completely in charge of looking after him (laughs).

I never want Sho-kun to change
As for the title “Never Ending Story”, there is the part that I never want the members to change like Sho-kun always saying “Good morning” to each one of us every morning.
For me the members feel close to a family, soI’m the type of person who is somewhat embarrassed to say “Good morning” or “Well done”. to someone directly. Yet Sho-kun, even when he comes later, will go to everyone and say “Good morning, Ruki.” “Good morning, Junki.”. I feel this is really “leader-like”, isn’t it?

I don’t want to make JO1’s impression bad.

Infinite City

I feel that everything I do and see is connected to growth and I’m ready to challenge it.
In “Infinite City” there comes the phrase “Best Supporting Actor Award”, but I think I’m more the supporting actor type than the lead character. I always observe and watch the situation and I try to secretly follow the member’s conversation when they seem to get caught up and I try to clean the dressing room right after everyone has left. Because if the dressing room stays dirty, it will surely give a bad impression of JO1. In order not to let this happen, I just tidy it up.
Actually, I’m not good at supporting or being helpful, but living is about learning. I haven’t done it before, yet nowadays I think that it’s important that I experience things that I'm not good with. I hope to discover something different in that process. When I do so, I can see things from a different perspective, and even when it comes to cleaning I start to pay attention to others. I think that the things I see, everything is connected to my growth, so I try out everything. My support are JAM.

We Alright

JAM are who support my body which is loosing HP
In “We Alright” there are the lyrics “We will overcome the limits” and this year we always did so. Thankfully, we were able to have our first lives with audience, we had various jobs and were able to have a lot of experiences. I do think that for our growth it’s better to move as much as we can as long as we are young, but out of the original HP nothing might be there anymore (laughs). It’s all about energy and determination, but we can only do it because JAM are waiting for us.

Even if I eat as much yakiniku as I want, when I wake up on the next day, I want to eat it again.
In order to regain my stamina, I’m spending my off days relaxingly~- Also, my beloved yakiniku! For me, yakiniku is my energy source. Even when I go to eat as much yakiniku as I want with the staff and think “I can’t eat anymore”, when I wake up on the next day I want to eat it again. What I like is tongue, skirt steak and the salad (of the store)! I could eat those forever!

Tsurubo, Kimata and Keigo, these three do nothing but mischief!

Run&GO

The only smart part of them is not to make me their target.
The word “protagonist” stands out in “Run&Go”, doesn’t it?
In JO1 the protagonists of mischief are Tsurubo Shion, Kimata Syoya and Sato Keigo (laughs). Generally, if something silly happens, these three are involved. I don’t really remember it because it was so insignificant what we were doing, but the other day, they were tickling the members and heartly laughed about it. Not even elementary students do that (laughs)! Their main targets are Kono Junki, Kawanishi Takumi and Ohira Shosei and they seem to have fun together. They know that if I became their target, they would get the double amount back, so they don’t try. That’s smart of them, isn’t it? (laughs) Shion, take responsibility for your own slip ups! Shion’s, Kimata’s and Keigo’s silliness is dangerous so I don’t try to pay back (laughs). I would badly hurt myself if I tried! Because, they don’t even think at all of the payback, because they achieved their goal just by being silly. Hence, I’m the only one slipping when I try to make a joke back. Speaking of this, some time ago, in an interview, Shion said that fooling around with Kimata and Keigo often happens under my direction! Please let me deny that here! Please try to take responsibility for our own slip ups.! (in a loud voice)
Mame is only rebellious against the CEO.

Oasis

Mame’s expression of his honest emotions is cute and irresistible!
For me the member who is like an “OASIS” is Mamehara Issei. He is simply adorable. He is very pure and natural, so when he is happy is really excited and when he is having a hard time, he looks like that. You can see it in his eyes, hence I think he is so cute.
He is the beloved youngest of the group, so it makes you feel soft when you see how much he is loved by everyone. However, for some reason he is rebellious against Choi CEO. The CEO loves Mame and keeps calling him “Mame, Mame”, but Mame directly replies “It’s okay” (laughs). It is also exposed that he is completely embarrassed by that. He is really happy, but he can’t admit that. I think he might think of him like a father. When I see this, I think how cute he is. I want him to end his rebellious phase soon (laughs).

My “OASIS” is the sauna I visit with the members.
What heals me are crepes. I love whipped cream. Normally, when I use my brain I want to eat sugar and I end up wanting to eat those then. Furthermore, going to the sauna relaxes me a lot. I also try my best to go into the cold water bath and try to make a few sets. It’s also good for the skin, so I often go with Mame, Sho-kun or Keigo.

[partly translation]

When the covers were revealed JAM commented that when the designed circle was turned upside down it would look like a ring, hence it’s perfect for Shiroiwa-san with his Prince character.
Ruki: When I saw that idea, I thought it’s funny. Actually I wasn’t told what it means and I don’t know what the designer’s idea was, but I’m really happy that it was investigated like this. I think we might also have things we haven’t noticed yet, so I'm really looking forward to seeing who will notice the easter eggs, JAM or us.
Shosei: It’s like a treasure hunt (laughs). In Bokura no Kisetsu there are a lot of scenes when two members sing together. It is indeed the highlight. So far we have a lot of songs in which we sing one after another, yet by singing together we can create a beautiful melody. At the tree that Ruki-kun mentioned earlier, light comes from above. It feels like the light of hope, doesn’t it? That we dance there has the message that after loss, in a world has fallen there is hope when you look up. It’s wonderful with all those meanings set up in a magnificent way. Please take your time to watch it.
Ruki: During the recording the producer said that he chose the pairs in order to create a lovely world view with beautiful harmony, so I think this is also a highlight. By the way, first I sing with Junki, then with Mame and lastly with Ren-kun.
Junki: The chemistry with me was good, wasn’t it?
Ruki:… yes
Junki: Why was there a pause? (Laughs) But actually when we sing together, our individuality comes out. I realised that the combination of high and low notes makes a completely different singing voice. Ah, I got something to say. Have you listened to the song?

Yes I have.
Junki: When I first listened to it it had a bright image of it. The sound is so bright and also a sparkling winter sound is used, so I thought it’s going to be a really bright song. But in the lyrics there is the feeling of loss. Behind a bright smile there is past loss, current loss and the feeling of loneliness. Also, we are singing “in the future I’m going to meet you for sure”. I hope you will enjoy this gap, too.

Because there is this gap, it’s dramatic and the declaration “I will come to you before it becomes cold” is really good, too.
Shosei: It’s really good. Isn’t it lovely to meet the people you wanted to see and feel warm in the freezing winter? I think everyone has waited for us at the lives, too. I think it has quite the meaning that we were able to sing this song at our first live with audience.
Ruki: I have the part “Without you, I can’t do anything”, which is certainly about us and JAM. Furthermore, for me there is also the meaning that without Sukai we can’t do anything. This “you” is JAM and it’s Sukai. Hence, I hope that the listeners will apply it to someone important to them and not just to their love interest. You are absolutely right.
Ruki: Yes. When you normally listen to it, you might feel that you is the person you like, but I’m singing for JAM, Sukai and everyone dear to me, so I hope everyone will listen to it repeatedly.

(Talking about Prologue)
I think the message “though we are apart now, one day we can meet again. I’m always thinking (of you)” makes it a really good song for the graduation season. Furthermore, it’s a song that you can listen to over and over, thinking of the people you were separated from in the audition, past friends and so on.
Shosei: Yes, like this.
Junki: I really like this. At the end of it there is also “Never Ending Story”. If you listen to it, you will understand that there is not the end. You understand from the melody that there is a continuation.
Shosei: Isn’t it hard to understand if you say it like this? (Laughs)
Junki: If you listen to it, you will understand! (laughs)
Shosei: It’s a really good song and we hadn't had a song yet that we sang for the people who we were separated from, so it has become a cherished song.

Infinite City has a rock sound and it’s a song overflowing with a dashing feeling.
Junki: There is quite the dashing feeling.
Shosei: I think it’s a song that will make the crowd lively at a live. So I’m really happy about it. However, the key is so high.
Ruki: Absolutely, it’s high!
Shosei: It’s so high! I did my best during the recording while my voice became raspy.
Junki: Everyone is singing this high key, so I think everyone raised their skills in regard to the singing.
Ruki: It’s the first time that we have such an EDM sound, so I think it would fit for a party. It brings you in high spirits.
Junki: It seems to be good for making cheers! I think at a live show when the fans can shout, it will be a song to get excited!

The concept of WANDERING is to wander, but how do you see this concept?
Ruki: For JO1 a lot has happened until we reached our 3rd year. At this milestone, there is surely still a part that wanders. Exactly because in these two years a lot of things took place, it’s time to hold on for us. Also, it’s a period for us in which we have to endure everything. In order for both JO1 and LAPONE to overcome this, to grow further, we try to continue to search for the answer, look ahead and get up. 2022 will be a year of competitions for JO1, so we have to work even harder.

This is a strong statement which makes me look forward to your 3rd year even more. By the way, is there anyone in the group who is wandering?
Ruki: Wandering… Junki seems like he doesn’t know what to do, does he?
Junki: eh?
Ruki: Aren’t you often teased by Mame, Shosei and Takumi?

By the younger members?
Ruki: Yes this. The only way he responds to this, is getting slightly angry, saying “What are you saying?” Like an snapping character (laughs)
Junki: That’s not wandering! I’m not a snapping character! Maybe!
Ruki: Recently, he quite takes it out on me. He teases me a lot. While thinking “what’s with that guy?”, I take it with a big heart thinking “He is wandering around”.
Junki: That’s not wandering! (laughs) Well, both in a good and bad sense I think the members are teasing me recently.
Ruki & Shosei: (laugh)
Junki: The more I try to maintain my dignity, the more they come for me.
Ruki: The more Junki rebels, the stronger the kids become!
Shosei: Sho-kun and Ren-kun laugh about this and kindly watch over it.
Junki: If you say so, Shion is wandering for real!
Shosei: True (laughs)

In which regard?
Junki: During the audition, Shion was said to be “rebellious”. Even now he is sharp from time to time, at his core he is a good guy. So, it’s like his heart tells him not to do such things and you end up seeing him struggling (laughs). That’s funny, isn’t it? Shion, who doesn't know what he should do, is cute.
Shosei: Let’s stop here before it goes any more real (laughs)
Ruki: Yes, it would be like a trial in absence (laughs).

Kono-san was here and that's exactly why he was exposed.
Junki: So I’m not wandering! (laughs)
Everyone: (laughs)

[JO1] J-WAVE NEWS 211219

https://news.j-wave.co.jp/2021/12/post-8893.html

JO1’s leaders Yonashiro Sho and Kawashiri Ren talk about the highlights of the new single and episodes related to “presents”.

(Excerpt from their appearance on December 13)

JO1 won an award at one of Asia’s biggest music award ceremony
JO1 won the “Best Asian Artist Japan” award at 2021 MAMA(Mnet ASIAN MUSIC AWARDS), one of the biggest Asian music award ceremony held on December 11. Kawashiri commented on his joy.
Ren: I didn’t even dream of winning this award and we performed on one of the biggest stages in Asia. It was a great present that we got.
Sasha: You got an early Christmas present.
Ren: Thank you very much!

The 5th single is released in December!
On December 15, JO1 released their 5th single “WANDERING”. It is sold in 4 versions; regular, limited A, limited B and anime edition (BORUTO - NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS design)
Sho: This time it’s a double A-side single and the songs “Bokura no Kisetsu” and “Prologue” are featured. “Prologue” is the ending song for the anime “BORUTO - NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS”. The single is full of winter songs that are perfect for this season.
Sasha: If you bring all different versions together, it’s 7 songs all together.
Sho: Yes. Because it’s full of winter songs that are perfect for this season, please listen to it.
Sasha: Do the songs have a warm feeling?
Sho: They have. For us I would say these were a new kind of song. A lot of the songs have a melody that makes you want to snuggle up to someone.
Sasha: It’s a change from your previous songs that were upbeat and driving?
Sho: Yes. There are a lot of songs that have a slight “mature” feeling.

The two talked about the points that they kept in mind for this single.
Sho: Until now, we were using our energy to the fullest, but I feel like we’ve put more strength into conveying the feelings with the lyrics.
Ren: When I took time to read the lyrics of “Bokura no Kisetsu”, (I realised that) they were all in Japanese. There is no English. We are active in Japan currently, so I felt it would be easier to convey the virtue of the Japanese language.

How do you bring together the individual members?
How does a recording of JO1 which is made of 11 members takes place?
Sasha: When you sing the song, do you discuss it with the members and everyone else before recording?
Ren: That’s right.
Sho: We try to grasp the meaning of the lyrics ourselves and express it during the recording.
Sasha: That’s amazing. You are a big group and do you two big brothers guide and lead?
Ren: I’m the performance leader, but it’s different from being the vocal leader. Member leader and Kono Junki are leading everyone in regards to the singing.
Sasha: Is that so? So the center member changes for each part.
Ren: That’s right.
Sasha: At last, the leader brings this together.
Sho: We are all working as one in this. It’s fun.
Sasha: I had been the host of one of the stages where JO1 had appeared and your teamwork was really good. I was amazed how you brought together those masses of different personalities. The ages are also different. Isn’t it hard?
Sho: Mamehara Issei is 19 years old and our youngest member, but when the younger generation is lively, I become lively, too. If only the older members do it, there is inevitably a composed image, so it’s helpful to have the energy of the younger members.
Neuhauss: For balance, the young energy is a necessity.
Sasha: If you looked from the standpoint of the younger members, the experiences of the older members are a resource of security. I think it’s amazing that you can all grow together.

Realising dream collaborations with leading figures of the music business
In honour of the upcoming Christmas season, the two talked about episodes related to “presents”.
Sho: Speaking of an early Christmas gift, we were able to perform a collab with Wada Akiko-san at “FNS Kayosai”.
Sasha: Wow!
Sho: For us, it feels like this collab might be a Christmas gift. We also appeared at the summer “FNS Kayosai” and back then we were able to perform along Go Hiromi-san. Both felt like receiving extraordinary presents.
Sasha: You were able to perform along with leading figures of the music business.
Sho: These two were really cool.
Sasha: Both of them had been guests of this program already, but they have an aura, right? I’m glad that you got a wonderful Christmas present early.

OWV Private Talk

Katsunari focus

Q: After being active together for a year, what kind of characters are the members in your opinion?
Honda Kosuke
He is older than me and normally he talks well, but in our daily lives he is mischievous and like the youngest child.
I like that he is brimming with curiosity. He is a rascal who is an earnest leader (laughs).
Urano Shuta
The group's lubricant.
I think Shuta is who makes OWV run smoothly. He also has a side of being particular about the atmosphere and the video quality. To sum him up, he is a perfectionistic comedy lover
Sano Fumiya
The type who once he decides on something he will do it.
I think his virtue is that he has own solid axis. He is confident, which is absolutely necessary when you work in front of people, so I admire him. He is a stoic mediator.

Kosuke -> Katsunari
He is a frank character.
He is stylish, he has a model figure and his visuals are perfect, so you might think he is cool, but nowadays the fans found out he is a ponkotsu (a clumsy airhead) (laughs).
Shuta -> Katsunari
He has an absentminded side.
Normally he is called a ponkotsu. He often ends up saying “that‘s right” and “eh? What's that?” (Both in kansai-ben) It’s cute that he often doesn’t think.
Fumiya -> Katsunari
He is the type who seems shy but who opens himself to the people who trust him.
We have been getting along since before, but at first I felt some distance, yet if anything nowadays he retorts without hesitation.

I enjoy playing online games while voice chatting with my school friends.

Q: What kind of winter date would you like to have?
Because I dislike crowded places, I would like to go to a park where it’s quiet and only a few people. We go on a walk and go on a swing while having something warm to drink and do some small talk. I would like to have a simple date. I only drink black coffee and it would be cute if they imitated me.

Q: Is there something you do for your beauty?
I try to use vitamin based serums and milk lotions.
I’m a dark skinned person, so I try to use skincare products that lighten my skin. Also, everyday before I go to bed, I take vitamins.

Q: Something you got into or you started to collect recently?
Recently I started to play online games with my friends from middle and high school.
Everyone is working now, so after work until we sleep we are having fun playing online games while having a voice chat. We talk about middle and high school and imitate our teachers from back then.

Q: Please introduce the new album and which song would you recommend to the readers?
In the title track “CHASER” our feelings of one year are included. I think through the album you can experience the wide range of OWV’s songs.
My recommendation is “My flow”.
The track is a pop and exciting song. It’s a song that stays in your ears, so please listen to it when you feel good.

Honda Kosuke and Nakagawa Katsunari detailly explain their own profiles

Profile
Honda Kosuke
With his trademark of powerful dancing he is also in charge of choreographing. His charm is the gap between an overflowing chivalry as the leader and his childlike heart.
Birthday: 1995.4.11 (26 years old)
Hometown: Prefecture Fukushima
Bloodtype: A
Height: 175cm
Hobbies: watching movies, capsule toys, games, Kamen Rider, Anime
Skills: Acrobatics, video editing, Free dancing to Japanese music

Nakagawa Katsunari
His charm point is the strong rap that comes from his handsome face. An all rounder who can also be the (main) vocalist. On the one hand he charms with being a tall and powerful performer, but off the stage, he becomes the soothing presence of the group.
Birthday: 1997.3.16 (24 years old)
Hometown: Prefecture Hyogo
Bloodtype: A
Height: 183cm
Hobbies: listening to music, lyrics writing, driving, Youtube, playing around with the lightstick and QWV
Skill: Boxing

The origin of your name
Kosuke: The 康 of Kosuke has the wish that I should grow up healthily. Thanks to this?, I never caught a cold until I moved to Tokyo and I never missed school.
Katsunari: I only have a vague idea… But it surely comes from a warrior. My dad likes the warriors of the warring states period, so it’s only my imagination, but 就 the same as Mori Motonari’s name, thus it’s the warrior kind one with the hope that I will grow up strongly (laughs)

An episode from your birth
Kosuke: I think I never heard anything…
Katsunari: It seems like since my birth I have a dark complexion and my mother often told me that she said “I thought I had born a Karinto” when I was born (laughs)

About your hometown
Katsunari: I’m from the city of Kobe in the prefecture Hyogo. Kobe is a big city but besides that it has a whole different atmosphere from Tokyo. The townscape in which western culture is mixed into is really beautiful. As a highschooler, I used to play with Yu-Gi-Oh cards at the “Minato no mori park” which had a skateboard area and a basketball court.
Kosuke: You played Yu-Gi-Oh there? (laughs)
Katsunari: Well I also did skateboarding and basketball.
Kosuke: I’m from the countryside in the prefecture Fukushima. The place where I often went to have fun and where also my highschool was located is the most prosperous one in Fukushima. Fukushima is known for Ramen, so during my high school days, after school I went around the Ramen stores with my friends by bicycle. I pretty much tried all Ramen in the city! I miss the countryside so I often watch the YouTube channel “Saga yo ka deshou”.
Katsunari: Not “Tsuriri yo ka deshou”?
Kosuke: It’s the sub channel! Those are videos in which about 7 adults have fun in the countryside and they built a house, cultivated a mountain and just watching it is fun!
Katsunari: This is really nice.

Your nickname
Kosuke: My one is Yasupon.
Katsunari: Where is that “pon” coming from?
Kosuke: I think it has no meaning and it’s just the word? Just like our debut song “UBA UBA”. Since highschool I’m Yasupon.
Katsunari: In my case it’s Kakkun, Katsu or Katsunari. When I was a child my parents called me Kakkun and now it’s Katsunari.
Kosuke: That’s normal! I’m also Kosuke for my parents.
Katsunari: It is (laughs)

About your height
Katsunari: With 183cm I’m the tallest member, but recently when I boarded the train with thick soled shoes like always, I hit the top of my head on the door which was really embarrassing. I had troubles because of my height. But I'm happy that because of my height clothes look good on me. Actually, I wanted to reach about 185cm.
Kosuke: Since I was a child, I imagined my height becoming 175 cm. So I’m happy that I stopped growing at the right moment.
Katsunari: Eh? I feel some negativity…?
Kosuke: No No! There is none at all, it’s just my ideal was 175cm (laughs)

About your blood type
Katsunari: In OWV everyone but Fumiya is A-type. But my mother is O and my father is A, so rather than an O type I became A. Normally I’m rough, but when I line up books, I line them up by height. And I’m very particular about such things, but I often leave my clothes where they are.
Kosuke: My parents are also A and O type! That’s why I get that. In front of other people or in other people's spaces, I’m precise just like an A type, but at home or in my own space I don’t care and I’m messy.
Katsunari: We are really the same~!

About your personality
Kosuke: Katsu is often called the calm and soothing type, but I wasn’t soothed by him yet (laughs). The fans might be soothed by his face?
Katsunari: Come on! My face?
Kosuke: But besides him speaking kansai-ben, his way of talking doesn’t come off strong, so there is some comfort in listening to him. Also, he is a cute ponkotsu. He is more of an idiot than a natural airhead (laughs)
Katsunari: …. I would rather be a natural airhead (laughs). Honda-kun is everyone's reliable big brother. But this shatters in private and he acts like the youngest child.
Kosuke: No, I’m the big brother! Because I’m everyone’s aniki~ Please don’t be mean to me~
Katsunari: Hey, that was absolutely like the youngest child (laughs)

About your member colour
Katsunari: We decided on the member colours ourselves and my one is purple. Honda-kun and Fumiya had red and blue hair since the audition, so like that they became red and blue, Shuta’s personality is bright, so his one is yellow, but in my case it was difficult.
Kosuke: Purple fits you. Because you are sexy and handsome.
Katsunari: But purple clothes don’t suit me at all, right? Some time ago, I ended up buying blue and…
Kosuke: But you were torn between red, too (laughs)
Katsunari: But it’s not my member colour at all. But when I happen to see purple accessories, I choose those.
Kosuke: I like red, but because my hair is red, I only buy white or black clothes and accessories.

About your position
Kosuke: On the outside I’m the leader, but behind the scenes I might be in charge of beauty. Or in charge of the nutrition. I’m also fasting regularly so I have done a lot of research and have knowledge, so please leave this to me!
Katsunari: I am in charge of being the neutralizer…? When it’s lively, I soften the atmosphere!
Kosuke: fufu
Katsunari: Eh? Why are you laughing?
Kosuke: Nothing. Ah, but aren’t you in charge of sexiness? Or you are in charge of being an ikemen or in charge of the visuals.
Katsunari: Yes, it could be… no no! I absolutely don’t want to say that I’m in charge of being an ikemen! (laughs)
Kosuke: Yeah, indeed Katsu is really cool.

About your hobbies
Kosuke: I like capsule toys, and I want to create one with OWV. Inside there are A~D patterns and the A prize is a deformed figure of a member. The capsule part is the face and when you open it there are the limbs and the body that you can assemble. Other than this I would like to make a lottery-like gacha with something like can badges or acrylic keyrings! It would be nice if some of them had tickets to change for signed CDs.
Katsunari: In my profile from the agency there is written “playing around with the lightstick and QWV (laughs), but there is a story behind it. During our first oneman, I thought it’s beautiful how the fans waved the lightsticks so I kept calling “Wave it, Wave it”. Back then I said “My hobby is to playaround with the lightstick and QWV”, so after the live show it was added to my profile (laughs)
Kosuke: But it’s true, isn’t it?
Katsunari: Yes. What I want to try next is, something like I throw questions and no one can go home until everyone’s colour is the same (laughs)
Kosuke: That’s a game you often see!
Katsunari: But barely at a live?

A trait you want to appeal
Kosuke: Lastly, I have a palm line called the dynast line which means I have the strongest luck in the world, so much that I could take over it. Only a very few percent of people seem to have it. In order for OWV to succeed, I aim to be a leader like “One Piece”’s Luffy who doesn’t impose his opinions on everyone else.
Katsunari: Honda-kun has such a personality that when he just walks everyone naturally wants to tag along. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t live this life right now, so I really admire him.
Kosuke: You don’t have to say that! (embarrassed)
Katsunari: You are making me embarrassed! (laughs)
Kosuke: But if you look at it from the other side, I feel like I received the life from all OWV members, so in that regard I have the strong desire to lead them. At the same time I also feel pressure, but in those times having something like the dynast line feels like some kind of weapon that gives me some confidence.
Katsunari: However, I haven’t felt Honda-kun’s dynast aura yet.
Kosuke: You better feel that!

[JO1] Hot Pepper 211224

Kawashiri Ren x Ohira Shosei x Tsurubo Shion

Kawashiri Ren
Born 1997.3.2. Blood type O. From the prefecture Fukuoka. JO1’s dance leader. His gorgeous and elegant dance is the highlight that creates a world view to the detail in every song!

Ohira Shosei
Born 2000.4.13. Blood type A. From the prefecture of Kyoto. JO1’s juvenile beauty leader. He burns with a passionate will more than anyone else and he continues to show a rapid growth in singing, rapping and dancing.

Tsurubo Shion
Born 2000.12.11. Blood type A. From the prefecture Shiga. A charming “alien” with a low tone rap. In charge of visuals as recognized both by himself and others. Loves his family and members.

Pink Issue

“On my last day I want to surely eat the food my mother made.”

Do you have a “reward” dish?
Shosei: Donuts from the conbini. I especially love the whipped cream that is inside!
Shion: Once a week I order kaisendon (seafood rice bowl), but the avocado, salmon, tuna and cucumber are so delicious.
Ren: For me it’s Sushi, yakiniku, fruits and chocolate.

Please tell us what you would want to eat on your last day.
Shion: I have decided that already. The potato salad I’ve made!
Ren: I tried the one Shion self made and it was delicious.
Shosei: For me it’s the Hayashi rice my mother made. It’s the most delicious in the world.
Ren: For me it’s a bento made by my mom.
Shion: Everyone answered “mom”. Also my potato salad. Because I make it myself but the receipt is from my mother (laughs)

Is there a recent episode of having a meal with the other members together?
Ren: Sho-kun made Hayashi rice for me.
Shion: I went to eat yakitori with Kimata. We also ate it to celebrate my 20th birthday, but recently we went again. We ate too much and together we were miserable (laughs).
Shosei: Some time ago, we had a takoyaki party in my room. Pretty much everyone came, right?
Shion: The ones who wanted to eat gathered.
Shosei: It’s something we can do because we all live together.
Shion: It really felt like a student gathering. We had fun while saying “so delicious~”.

If you went back to your hometown, is there any beloved “hometown dish” that you want to eat?
Shion: Shiga’s Funazushi. I can eat it for sure, but I’ve heard that the smell is unique, but I hope you will try it.
Shosei: Niku Udon from a okonomiyaki store in Kyoto.
Shion: There is udon besides that it’s an okonomiyaki store?
Shosei: Both are delicious, but I prefer this niku udon. It’s a store that people who know about it go to…I forgot the name of it, I’m sorry!
Ren: I like Ramen and motsu nabe and the meitai motsu nabe from Kyushu style restaurants.
Shion: The best. Only what you like!
Shosei: (looked motsu nabe up on his phone) wow~ it looks delicious!
Shion: you get that it’s absolutely delicious just by looking at a picture.
Shosei: Let’s go to eat with everyone!

Orange Issue

Your beauty routine every morning or every evening?
Shosei: After waking up in the morning and after bathing I drink kireeto lemon. Really thanks to this my skin doesn’t become irritated. How about Shion?
Shion:… What should I say? I’m really not doing anything… (laughs)
Shosei: You started to be aware of your eating habits. That you don’t eat much after 6pm for example.
Shion: Ah that’s right! Also, I watch one anime (episode) per day to restore myself mentally.
Ren: I drink lots of water. I try to drink hot spring water.
Shion: Hot springs water? Is that bath water?
Ren: No no (laughs) It‘s drinkable water that has minerals from a hot spring (laughs)

Who do you think is someone with a high aesthetic sense?
Shion: Eh, people who don’t stink.
Shosei: (laughs) Well, true. I think people whose speech is beautiful and people who are aware of their eating habits have a high aesthetic sense.
Ren: People who have a stance and manners.
Shion: My posture is really bad… (laughs)* But really, I think besides me all members have a high aesthetic sense. Shosei’s skin is somehow very beautiful. He doesn’t even have pores!
TN: Shion seems to make a joke because 姿勢 can both mean mental and physical stance/posture. Ren seems to refer to the mental one while Shion seems to mean the physical one

Lastly, what kind of year do you want to make in 2022?
Shosei: I want to work more closely with JO1 and I hope it will be a year in which I can enjoy each day and in which I improve.
Shion: My goal is to double the current SNS followers!
Ren: Oh~ that’s good! Well for me, I want to challenge myself more for JAM and for our next year.

What kind of challenges do you want to try?
Shosei: I would like to do voice acting again. I want to practise more and appear as a voice actor again!
Shion: Of course there are JO1’s activities, but I would like to appear as a Yankee in a Yankee movie!
Ren: I want everyone to listen to my self composed song.
Shion: Ren-kun also made the theme song for PROCESS JO1.
Shosei: In the demo version, Ren-kun sings, but it’s the same as the demo versions we always get from Korea. I thought “what a pro!” He is that good!

Blue Issue

Our secret trick not to get stressed is to gather in our leader’s room!

What is your must beauty method? Shosei: Doing my base makeup neatly. Recently we have been very busy and my skin has become irritated, so I have to do my best with the base make-up. Also, I use eyeshadow to make my eyes look a little more upward. Because of my droopy eyes.
Shion: My face is massaged before the make-up is applied. Also my shoulders. It feels good.
Ren: I don’t know much about hair styling and make-up, so at least I do my best in regard to the care and I leave the set up to the pros (laughs)

Is there a hair style or a hair colour you want to challenge next?
Shosei: I would like to keep my hair dark for a long time.
Shion: Aren’t you going to bleach them anymore?
Shosei: Well it’s because my scalp is kinda dead (laughs) Because I dyed them for more than 3 years. I might like to try to black long hair. I want to grow them longer.
Ren: I’m the opposite of Shosei and I want to have a flashy hair colour. Like yellow or neon green. I would also like to try white or silver again.
Shion: I would like to add extensions!
Ren: Oh! That’s something new!
Shion: It’s not a must, but I would like to add it as a point.

Do you have some trick to let go of stress?
Shosei: It’s hard for me to be alone, so I always try to talk with the members. Rather than being alone, chatting with the members relaxes me.
Shion: That makes me happy!
Ren: Well, let’s do it in our leader’s room tonight!
Shosei & Shion: Let’s go! (laugh)
Shion: I don’t get stressed out to begin with. Because I’m always doing what I want to! (laughs)
Ren: I don’t know much about stress relief methods, so please tell me your recommended ones!
Shosei: Ren-kun always seems to think a lot in his head, so I want him to go to the oxygen capsule and get a good sleep.
TN: Oxygen capsules seem to be the new trend in Japan to help stressed workers to relax. It’s like an oxygen tank with 85+% oxygen as breathing gas where you can lie and sleep. They claim to help you relax and give you a better sleep.

If you had to give beauty advice to the readers and JAM?
Shosei: Try to let the lotion soak in slowly and carefully.
Shion: Health is precious, so let’s build proper muscles!
Ren: I think the quickest way to become beautiful is to smile, so let’s do our best without overdoing it and laugh a lot!
Shosei: That’s so good! Well said!

[JO1] Nikkei Entertainment 211201

The will and real strength to show (themselves) in the new boys era
They debuted on 4th March 2020. Since then, JO1 have worked hard and built their position, sincerely tackling “what they can do” while they were forced to limit their activities because of Covid-19. How do they see their progress and what do they think before the release of the 5th single? This time, we talk with the center Shiroiwa Ruki, the leader Yonashiro Sho and the youngest member Mamehara Issei.

5th single “WANDERING” (release December 15)
The lead tracks are “Bokura no kisetsu” and “Prologue”.
It is their first double A-side single under the keyword “further growth”, having overcome difficulties and crises until now. The first lead track “Bokura no Kisetsu” is a medium synth pop number with a gentle atmosphere. The other lead track “Prologue” is a semi ballad that is the ending theme for the anime “BORUTO - NARUTO NEXT GENERATION”. It is a song that overlaps with the friendships and challenges that both the anime and JO1 depict.

On December 15th, JO1 are going to release their 5th single “WANDERING”. This single is their first double A-side single and the center is Shiroiwa Ruki. Shiroiwa who had been the center of various songs during “PRODUCE 101 JAPAN” where the group was born, finally stands on that position for the first time in JO1. He is eager, saying “I want to make this single one that can evolve JO1 further.”

Ruki: My mental state after being chosen as the center for this single, is that I'm honestly happy about it, and there is the feeling of responsibility “that I have to make it a good work” and there is a bit of anxiety mixed into it. In JO1 the individuality is strong, so I’m doing it with the belief that everyone can be center, but the fans were delighted about “Happy Merry Christmas” (the JO1 version is featured on their 1st album ‘The STAR’) of which I was the center during the audition. Thus, I feel like there might be a meaning in that I’m the center for another song that is released in winter.

Issei: Just like Ruki-kun said, the center position makes you feel responsibility after all. When I was center for our debut song “Mugendai (INFINITY)” I felt that strongly in the beginning. But to be honest, eventually I might not have cared about it anymore. There are 11 members and it’s the best when you can do it while relying on everyone.

Sho: Nowadays, the center one doesn’t seem to stand out as much as during “Mugendai” both in regard to the dance formation and the singing, so the feeling “Let’s do it together” is bigger. I don’t have the experience of being the center, but I think I won’t go as far and say “I want to aim for it”. We all feel like “I’m in charge of the center”.

Issei: The performance of “Bokura no kisetsu” (the first lead track of the single) is also beautiful.

Ruki: It’s also the first title in Japanese since “Mugendai” and there might be people who think it’s easy to listen to. It doesn’t feel overwhelmingly J-POP, but more J-POP than previous releases. I like it.

Sho: The other lead track “Prologue” is the ending theme for the anime “BORUTO - NARUTO NEXT GENERATION”. To be entrusted with a song for the sequel of “NARUTO” which I had been watching since I was a child… I’m deeply moved and I feel we are able to do something amazing.

Ruki: Especially that’s why, I want to make this a single that can evolve JO1 even further by peeling off one or two layers from us. The catchphrase of this single is “overcoming unexpected situations and hardships we faced and we will grow even more” and I think it’s the right time for this.
Both JO1 and the company “LAPONE Entertainment” move forward with the will of doing everything more seriously. Together we want to make “WANDERING” a single that gives us a good start into 2022.

JO1 debuted in March 2020. Unfortunately, Covid-19 spread, and one schedule after another was forced to change. Since their debut they only performed in front of their fans on 23rd September 2021. Together with OWV and Enjin whose members also come from “PRODUCE 101 JAPAN” they appeared at “KCON World Premier - The Triangle” and it was their first time (to perform in front of fans).

We are doing the things we can do to the maximum.

Sho: We only stood in front of the fans at “JO1 1st FANMEETING” before our debut. But even now I can’t forget the voices and the scenery and those feelings are inside of us the whole time. Performing in front of everyone is our true work and we are a group whose 11 members were chosen by the fans. I think at “KCON” we were able to give it back a little.

Ruki: I felt the difficulty in bringing everyone together for the talk and I think we need to work on our live performances. I feel that the fun of live performances is to have an uniformed performance as a base and then you add your favorite spice to your part to make it more enjoyable for the audience, but until now we didn’t have the opportunity to perform live, so that’s something we need to smooth out. I hope to bring out the charms of our performances in the future and it was an experience that made me feel “Let’s go” and “I don’t want to lose”.

In their program “PROCESS JO1” that started to in July (available on their YouTube channel and a special TV version with unreleased scenes is currently broadcasted on TBS Channel 1), the members discuss, try out various things in order to become “Japan’s number 1 performance group”. Creativity is one point. Mamehara and Kawashiri Ren were involved in the making of the cover performance of Ado’s “Odo”. Do they have the vision of “making their own” in the future?

Sho: Not right now I think.

Issei: Hm… not now I think. I enjoyed making the choreography and directing of “Odo” together with Ren-kun. We showed each other what we had made and said “that’s good.” or “Let’s combine it with this.”, while keeping in mind the story of that stage. Really, I felt it was fun.

Sho: Regarding (the choreography of) “Odo” that they made, our gratitude is big. We are happy that they took the time to make this for the members, and I feel that they did make it with us in mind. so I thought “That’s our members.” One thing the members are working hard on right now, is learning languages. We are thinking about expanding to Asia.

Issei: In August, we appeared on the Indonesian online anime festival “Anime Land Festival” and showed the showcases. Back then, a video in which we greeted the fans in English and Indonesian was uploaded and there were scripts in the local language. As for me, I think I do the best I can. This year we also stood on stage of “M COUNTDOWN” and we also appeared on “MAMA” and “KCON” albeit those were online. This year, we were able to send our message overseas.

Sho: Nowadays SNS is also widely spread, so I hope to make use of everything possible and make us widely known to the people in this world.

We want to change the status quo of the Japanese entertainment world.

Despite encountering many “unforeseen circumstances”, JO1 have continued to move forward and achieved steady results in regard to sales and awards. JO1 are the 5th boygroupo in history to have four consecutive singles since their debut selling more than 200.000 copies. They won “Best New Asian artist” at “MAMA” in 2020 and the MV for the lead track “REAL” of their 4th single won the “Best Dance Video” at the “MTV VMAJ 2021” that was annouced in October 2021. However, there seems to be a gap between their specular records and the general public awareness of them. How do they see and analyse this?

Ruki: This is our homework. This number comes from the hard work of our fans and the result comes from a lot of people working together and it’s a fact that our popularity hasn't caught up on this. Even if they know the name JO1, they might not know us or our songs. That might be okay in our second year, but the place we aim for is an even higher spot and first, it’s to be “the ones who make Japan’s number 1 performance”. We still are at a place we can’t be satisfied with at all.

Issei: The “Number 1 in Japan” that we aim for is “the performance group with Japan’s number 1 synchronicity”. Right now, I think “Japan’s Number 1”are the ones from Johnny’s or LDH. But we go a different route, we want to bring Japan to the world with a performance that brings the 11 of us together. We have a lot of opportunities to talk with each other about how we can make this happen.

Sho: Especially recently a lot of new groups appeared, so we have been discussing how we can differentiate ourselves and how we can make the most of our strengths, but both our group and our company are still young, so we are in a state of moving forward while searching for answer to the things we don’t understand left and right. Regarding the goal that the other mentioned, in addition to our own homework, there are also the circumstances of the company such as the shortage of manpower. I think in this context we have to do what we can little by little. The most important thing we can do is to keep practising and improving our performances. We have to continue to have a strong and high will and then we have to share our current thoughts and ideas with the company and see how we can move forward together.

Each day we talk with the members about our tasks and goals

For a long time in the Japanese music industry, the era of Johnny’s and LDH continued in the regard of boy groups. In this situation, JO1 can be the pioneers who paved the way for groups to play an active role which are not affiliated with big agencies. Now, chasing this, new groups are born after another.

Issei: However, I'm happy about that. Because I want us to stand up together.

Ruki: We always say “We want to change the status quo of the Japanese entertainment world.” and no matter if it’s good or bad I want us to be called the “Special attack corps chiefs”.

Sho: Absolutely.

Ruki: Of course, we are getting criticized, but if we let that stop us, the long history of Japanese boy groups won’t change ultimately. In the end, if we can change something, I think we will have achieved one of our roles and mission. Right now it’s still only gradual… but we would like to change it more seriously in the future. It’s a fact that audition programs have increased in Japan since our beginning, and SKY-HI-san (who presided over the audition “THE FIRST”) has also watched “PRODUCE 101 JAPAN” and made a comment for it. I think we were able to make a change and influence on him in that way.

Always moving forward with an ambitious heart

“We want to change” How will JO1 who have made the first step move on in 2022? The words “When Corona has passed” and “if it is possible” remind one of what they have said many times before “Expectation is not enough”.

Having fans is not something to take for granted. Thus we have to change.

Sho: How will it be?... Once Corona has passed, I would like to tour the whole country. If it wasn’t for Corona, we would have been able to do a tour. In November finally we will have our first lives with audience since our debut “JO1 Live ‘OPEN THE DOOR’”, but there are surely regional JAM who can’t come to the venue Makuhari Messe, so if it’s possible in 2022, I would like to go to the regions too. Because we all want to meet JAM.

Issei: We don’t know how Corona will be in 2022 and it’s not something we can do something about, so honestly, my goal is “I don’t know”. But I think it won’t be different from what we do now. Our goal is to improve singing, dancing and performing and as Ruki-kun said earlier, also improving our abilities to talk at live shows and our own individual activities. Just like now we will take lessons, and for me, I think we are quite doing our best we can. We will continue with this and of course we will do more than that, and I hope to have a hit song with the public.

Ruki: What “I want to make this come true” is something I also don’t know yet. But we don’t plan to be newcomers forever, so we have to change various things. While a lot of new groups come out, it is up to us to charm people so they stay interested in us. Because having fans is not something to take for granted. So for this I always think that we have to change and keep on showing this side of us. Because it’s not like our activities are limitless. I feel that if our popularity doesn’t continue, it’s going to be our end and we don’t know if we can still do it in 5 or 10 years. After all, the status quo needs to be changed.
Because we got juniors (INI who debuted on November 3rd) and there are a lot of other groups and we also don’t want to lose. Right now it’s a bit… The wording might be bad, but I feel that we (who debuted before) are often looked down on. But I don’t want to be looked down on. JO1 is the group that shoulders Japan and to make this true, we need to talk with each other more and compete more.I feel that the activities in 2022 will decide the future JO1.

Issei: Because you don’t know what is before.

Ruki: I don’t want it to end, but I want to be always active so that it leaves no regrets once it’s over, and this much I want to be popular. To do that we have to do it seriously, and if each member has something they want to do, they should tell that to everyone and we have to make it happen one by one. To be honest, there is a part that feels that there are things JO1 could have done but did not which is such a waste, so I think we need to communicate more with the company and I hope to strengthen that in the future. I think there isn’t anything perfect and you always have to change something. We want to have the ambition to improve each other.

Sho: Just like life, right?

Ruki: I think that when you stop it will be the end. We are a group that wants to keep on running, so also in 2022 we don’t have the intent to stop. and we constantly want to improve and aim for the top.

Yonashiro Sho
Born 1995.10.25, from the prefecture Okinawa. He is the beloved leader who wraps up JO1 with his big heart and body. With his gentle voice and English abilities he was entrusted with the English narration in the PR video of the “National theatre Okinawa”. He has a lot of hobbies like cooking, working out, playing guitar and remaking sneakers, and recently he is into making accessories with beads.

Shiroiwa Ruki
Born 1997.11.19, from Tokyo. With his neat and androgyny looks, he is in charge of being the prince of the group. He is often seen as someone cool, but his fans know his talkative true side that can’t stop talking, and he has a multifaceted charm. Recently, his “cunningly cute” expressions on TikTok became a hot topic.

Mamehara Issei
Born 2002.5.30, from the prefecture Okayama. He is the youngest who gets loved by the members and fans with the petname “Mame-chan”. Before the debut he was someone talented already who was a dance instructor in his hometown while being a highschool student and his speciality was the hiphop of the 90s. He likes Kamen Rider and wants to play him one day.

[JO1] Hochi Kokoyakyu 211206

Takumi Kawanishi JO1
Profile
Born on 23rd June 1999 in Hyogo prefecture. Started to play baseball at the Japanese style baseball club during his first year of elementary school as a pitcher, shortstop and catcher. Part of the Japanese style baseball club in middle school as a shortstop and pitcher. In the fall of his first year of Highschool he was on the bench as center fielder. During highschool he had 8 home runs all together. He was chosen as a member of JO1 in an audition program and made his major debut last year. The single “STRANGER” was the 4th single in a row that placed first in the Oricon weekly ranking. On December 15th the newest single “WANDERING” will be released.
TN: the difference between “Japanese style” baseball 軟式(野球) and “western” baseball 野球 is that the japanese style is played with a hard rubber ball.

Series Part 6
Final

The member Kawanishi Takumi (22) of the global boy group JO1 who used to be a highschool baseball player formed his “dream team” with the 11 JO1 members.
After the one year series of him being the main character of this magazine, this 6th issue will be the final one.
Taking both roles of player and coach he made his dream order.

Team name
“Samurai JO1 dreamz”
“I referred to the name of a local joint baseball team that I joined during the 6th grade. Back then, I was number 3, shortstop and also the pitcher. “

During my highschool years, my fellow club members decided on the order for the intrasquad games, but this was my first time as both coach and player. I earnestly thought of the batting order and the positions. This is my dream team “Samurai JO1 dreamz” !
TN: Intrasquad games are when the team divides itself into two squads and plays against each other.

Number 1 • left fielder
Kinjo Sukai (21)
178cm / throws and hits with his right hand
He has the fastest legs of the team. His power is amazing, so as the first batter he also has made an Inside-the-park home run. As number 1 I want someone who can hit long balls and can also steal bases. He also seems to have strong shoulders / a strong throw.
TN: Inside-the-park home run is a home run in which the ball wasn’t batted out the field.

Number 2 • short stop
Shiroiwa Ruki (24)

175cm / throws and hits with his right hand
Well, his head is like a shortstop. For shortstops the head is important. Because my favourite player Sakamoto Hayato (Giants) for example, is quite handsome. Ruki-kun is surprisingly thin, but he is someone nimble who can do anything, even small tricks.
TN: Giants = Yomiuri Giants, the baseball team from Tokyo and Takumi’s favorite team.

Number 3 • pitcher
Mamehara Issei (19)

173cm / throws right and hits left
Mame has the leading role. He has experience as a highschool baseball player. Some time ago he was a pitcher in a tv program and his control was good. Also, he likes Eldred who was active in Hiroshima. He will also be our Cleanup hitter.
TN: Brad Eldred, an American baseball player who played for the Hiroshima Toyo Carps until 2018.
Cleanup hitter: usually the number 4 and the most powerful hitter who cleans up the bases = gives the other runners time to run.

Number 4 • First baseman
Tsurubo Shion (20)

178cm / throws and hits with his right hand
Maybe because he can’t move much (laughs) He is tall and he might have the body form of a first baseman. He got power and he seems like he could do a home run.

Number 5 • Right fielder
Sato Keigo (23)

181cm / throws and hits with his right hand
He is tall and he is a right fielder with a powerful throw. A laser beam like Itoi Yoshio (Hanshin). With that image I choose him.
TN: Hanshin = Hanshin Tigers, the team of Osaka & Kobe

Number 6 • third baseman
Kono Junki (23)

174cm / throws and hits with his right hand
A mood maker who often shouts. Like Matsuda Nobuhiro (SoftBank), I want him to get more and more hyper. When I went to the batting center together with the members, Junki-kun was the best hitter.
TN: SoftBank = Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks

Number 7 • center fielder
Kawanishi Takumi (22)

170 cm / throws right and hits left
During my second year of Highschool, I was number 7, the center fielder. I also batted as the number 1 but personally I think this area is good for me. It feels comfortable. But as number 7 you have quite the chance to get around, don’t you?

Number 8 • catcher
Ohira Shosei (21)

176cm / throws and hits with his right hand
I think Mame can also play the catcher position, so I was unsure, but I chose Shosei. He has baseball experience and he got something unexpected in him. With an outwitting lead, he seems like he would give signs that the opposing batter can’t read. The reason why he is number 8 is that I want him below me (laughs).

Number 9 • second baseman
Kawashiri Ren (24)

173cm / throws and hits with his right hand
I decided this on the spot. His movements are sharp like the ones of a second baseman. The number 9 is important for connecting to the top positions. Ren-kun is the only one who I can entrust with this. I feel secure (with him in this position).

Reserve

Head of the dorm
Kimata Syoya (21)
171cm / throws and hits with his right hand
He is persistent, so he could also do pinch-hitting. Like Kamei Yoshiyuki who has retired? That’s too much said (laughs) If we were to defend, he could be second baseman. TN: The head of the dorm in (Japanese) baseball is often a retired player who manages the dorm where all players live and seems equally important as the coach.
pinch-hitter = a substitute batter

Captain
Yonashiro Sho (26)

180cm / throws and hits with his right hand
He will shout from the bench. As expected, the leader is the captain. His uniform number is 10 and during defence play he will be first baseman. If we played with DH system, Sho-kun might be the DH.
TN: DH - Designated hitter, a 10th player who bats in place of the pitcher. While it’s a common system in the US, the Japanese central league (of which the Yomiuri Giants are a part of) doesn’t use it.

JO1 dream team

Slogan
Go To The TOP
~ Run, Hit, Defend~
“I used JO1’s slogan as it is, [followed by] running, hitting and fielding. First, running is important.”

Asking player and coach Kawanishi

Q: The baseball style you aim for?
I want to keep the score at zero. We need to do the defence right. That’s why the pitchers are important.

Q: Will the pitcher be a complete game or with a relief pitcher?
Basically, the ace is the complete game. I would go with Mame who I completely trust, but depending on the situation, I do relief pitcher. Kinjo Sukai is the closer. His ball is fast. He is tsundere, so he also has a slow curve. He is good at tactics. I can also go as a starter. When Mame still played, he was center fielder, so we could exchange positions all the time.
TN: Basically the questions means whether the pitcher will stay the whole game or whether another pitcher takes over eventually.
A slow curve is a ball that has a spin that causes it to dive as it approaches the plate. It is considered as a more advanced pitch with a risk of injury.

Q: How do you score points while attacking?
I don’t want to do sacrifice bunts. I want everyone to swing as hard as they can. Isn’t that much more fun? I want everyone to be after the first pitch, the first strike actively. Everyone can hit a home run. They have the power. Moreover, we also have fast runners. During my highschool years, the coach told me “Run as you please”, so I might tell Sukai, too, “run as you like”.
TN: Sacrifice bunts is the act of deliberately bunting (a ball that is intentionally tapped into the play) which allows the baserunner to advance on the cost (sacrifice) of the batter.

Q: Can you aim for the victory at the Koshien?
That’s a little too hard. We are still weak. First we run, get stronger and then we start from the first round of the regional championships.
TN: Koshien is the Japanese High School Baseball Championship, taking place in summer and the largest scale amateur sport event in Japan, it takes place in Nishinomiya, Hyogo. Koshien is also the name of the district of Nishinomiya where the stadium (Hanshin Koshien Stadium) is located.

Takumi’s message
No matter when, give your all
That thanks to Hochi Kokoyakyu I was able to do something baseball related again makes me really thankful for this one year. I grew to like highschool baseball even more than before. I received a lot of power by watching the Koshien and seeing how everyone gave their very best in their play. Also for me the three years of highschool baseball were important. It was really hard and exhausting, but nowadays those are good memories and I learnt a lot of things. Since I became an adult there were also times that passed uneventfully, but after all I want to enjoy everything and give my very best. Exactly because in high school baseball, it’s over once you lose, I think the only way not to have regrets lingering is to give your very best. Just keep giving your all and don’t get injured, I will keep on supporting you.
