After your debut, how did your surroundings react? After the debut, which was only recently the chances to appear in magazines & TV increased und from my family and friends I often got the messages “I saw that!” which made me delighted. Of course my brothers send me messages, but when something is uploaded on JO1’s official channels, they share it on their stories and help to spread it. That makes me happy.
Is there something that changed in the relationship of JO1? When the debut single PROTOSTAR was released we got along, but there was a feeling like being worried and testing each other out (laughs) but we also started living together and we are not concerned about that in a good way. In the BTS Video of the MV & Cover shooting, you can see that our friendship has changed from our debut to now.
Next is about the new single STARGAZER. The lead track OH-EH-OH was written by Pentagon’s Hui who you were a back dancer for, so how did you feel when you first listened to it? First of all, I was super happy! When I was a back dancer, I didn't think I would be able to meet him again in such a way, so it’s like I received a "reward". Also because I’m center for this single, i thought “I am lucky”.
It’s the result of hard work. But I was lucky (laughs)
Was there something difficult during the shooting of the MV? Normally, I don’t talk loudly, but there are scenes in the MV when I had to be very loud, so I was very thirsty after shooting those (laughs) I was so loud that even the members were like “that was Ren?!”, so please pay attention to it when you watch the MV.
Now about “My Friends” of which you made the choreography. Please tell us your highlights and feelings of it. The image of “My Friends” is that “a song during which the fans have fun at a live”, so at the beginning I had two ideas “dancing” and “swinging your hands without dancing”, thus I decided to make a choreography that works for both. I think it became a song that has various ways of enjoyment because it has a simple choreography that we can dance with the fans together and has an element of “can enjoy yourself”.
Ren’s thoughts. What kind of people are the JO1 members? After the debut the members of JO1 grew close. We asked Ren about the 11 unique members including himself who is the most ○○.
The most attentive member? Takumi!
The liveliest member? Junki!
Funniest member? Ruki!
Who has the biggest sense of responsibility? Shion!
The member you can go to when you are troubled? Sho-kun!
The member who is always calm? Sukai !
Someone comforting? Shosei !
Who likes cleanness their most? Takumi!
The always hard working one? Mame!
Most fashionable one? Keigo!
Smartest member? That’s me!
Someone who is good at cooking or is a foodie? The foodie is Syoya! The ones who are good at cooking are me, Junki & Sho-kun! We haven’t decided yet who is the best one of us (laughs)
The gentlest member? That’s me too!
The one with the best leadership? Sho-kun of course!
The one who thinks the most of his friends? Keigo!
The one who can keep time & promises the best? Shion!
The one trains his body the most? Sho-kun! He worked out a lot yesterday.
Now that you say that (laughs) it’s indeed true! I can see how close you are. Also if we think about “home time” which you spend with the members you became friends with, is there something that became popular among the members? Hm... yes. A lot of members started playing instruments.
Which one do you play? I started playing the piano. I’m not good yet, but I will practise even more from now one.
When you heard that you were chosen to be the center of the second single, what did you think? I thought, maybe they had chosen me because the message of the single fits to me the best. In my interpretation, because I think that conveying the things I want to convey is the most important thing, I didn’t feel any pressure. I want to put everything out as “that’s the root of me as it is”.
In the new MV you challenge acting! Is there anything you want to try excluding singing and dancing? I want to try acting! The other members also felt the joy of acting and we did it while saying “that’s fun that’s fun” the whole time.
You also played the bad guy. I might like that role (laughs)
You have the image of always wearing white socks. How many do you have? I think I have 20-30 pairs. In my drawer one level has nothing but white socks.
By the way, what’s the key of keeping your socks white? Well... isn’t it the feeling of valuing white socks? (laughs)
Which compliment makes you the happiest? "You are funny!” The other members are crazy guys and funny guys, but I’m not funny at all. It makes me super happy when someone tells me that it was funny and could laugh about something I thought and said of as “cool”.
What makes you heal after a busy day? Something that heals me... well... I’m not that exhausted. No matter whether I have interviews, shootings or practise, it’s fun for me, so it has a refreshing feeling for me.
If the members came to Fukuoka, where would you want to go? Muccan manjuu! I want to say “Choose your favourite flavour~” (in Hakata-Ben) and let everyone eat. I ate there since my middle school times, so I really like it. For me, that’s Fukuoka! So it’s my soul food.
By the way, what are your favourite flavours? Custard & wiener!
Which songs do you want to try to cover or dance? Something from SEVENTEEN! I love their performances and they are 13 members and we are 11 members which is close, a cover would be fun.
I’m waiting for a JO1 ver of a SEVENTEEN song or a collaboration between the groups! Wah- I want to do that!
Lastly, a message please. Thank you for reading until here. That we can release our second single STARGAZER is thanks to everyone who always supported us. Because of COVID-19 we are in a situation where we couldn’t do activities like expected and can’t meet, we have worked hard on the CD, so please listen to it! I want to return to Fukuoka soon, so please wait for me (in Hakata-Ben)
