[JO1] Tokyo Calendar 220221
A great report in this magazine with JO1 “dance genius” Kawashiri Ren!
“Boiled Jiaozi in Hakusan”
Sharing a night full of surprises
In March 2020 the global boys group JO1 was born from the popular audition program “PRODUCE 101 JAPAN”. Among these 11 top members, Kawashiri Ren-san is called the “dance genius”. His brilliance on stage is well known, but in fact he is secretly in charge of the food reports in JO1. Hence, we called him to a popular Taiwanese restaurant for a collaboration with their boiled Jiaozi. This uncommon performer was able to bring his charm to the table as well.
Kawashiri Ren
Born in 1997, from the prefecture Fukuoka. In 2019 he participated in the audition program “PRODUCE 101 JAPAN” and became a member of “JO1”. Made his debut on 4th March 2020 with the single “PROTOSTAR”. He leads the members as their dance leader with his outstanding dance skills.
Kawashiri-san danced at the Taiwanese restaurant that was the location for the shooting?
“I kinda feel apologetic to the members.”
Right after enjoying the boiled Jiaozi, his friends came into Kawashiri Ren-san’s mind. When we asked who he would take along to this restaurant, he answered “I would take Kono Junki and Kimata Syoya, who love food. All of us can’t really drink alcohol, so we would toast with cola.” and made the gesture alone.
TN: Since the featured restaurant is a Taiwanese one, I decided to go with the Chinese name of the dish, instead of ‘Gyoza’.
This time it was a Taiwanese restaurant, but what kind of restaurants does he visit frequently?
I’m the type of person who just enters the store cause it seems good without actually deciding on it. Some time ago, during some free time before the practice, I went to a tsukemen restaurant with Ohira (Shosei) and Kono and we all ate a large serving. I feel there is a special connection with the people I meet when I just wander in, which in turn sometimes increases the deliciousness and makes me feel closer to them.
A place he wants to revisit is the Korean restaurant “Lock Stock” in Fukuoka. He had visited it for a magazine shoot (TN: City Jouhou Fukuoka June 2021 issue) and he couldn't forget the “Beef Galbi” he ate there in a hurry. He is known as someone who is good at cooking, and his stylishly arranged pancakes became a hot topic. We asked him, who got a good intuition, about his date plan.
"When I wander into a restaurant I feel that the meetings are special and I also feel a sense of familiarity."
"I have kinda a lot of foods I dislike and when the CEO of the company invited me some time ago, when reserving the meal course he asked me about my dislikes and he took them into account. Everything had been delicious. Hence, when we ask each other about our likes and dislikes, convey this to the store beforehand and eat a meal course that fits perfectly, each one of us will eat something different and we might let “the other one take a bite”. But I think this is a bit too delusional (laughs)."
An Italian restaurant with good pasta and pizza is his ideal. Would you meet at the (date) location in this case?
"First, we would have tea. When we drink the tea and walk there, we would discover a lot of other places, (saying) this seems nice, let’s go there on the next date."
By the way, the setting is the first date. You might surrender. Also, on this day something interesting happened. When we left the Taiwanese restaurant after the shooting, he danced a bit to the House music that was played as a BGM.
"I always end up dancing when I notice there is music. A while ago, when I went to the furniture store with someone from the company I danced after some time, too and it seems like I did so for quite some time, and they scolded me (laughs). I also move around while dancing and I even end up dancing in the fish corner of the supermarket. To that Sakana ~ Sakana~ Sakana~ song."
Then, his way of walking changes, fitting to the music he hears. “When I walk when there is a strong wind, I might listen to a heavy song, quietly walk, it would be a beautiful one.”
Whenever a song plays, his body instinctively ends up moving.
His first encounter with dancing was during his 5th year of elementary school. He became absorbed on the spot, and when he advanced to high school he decided “This is going to be my future job.” He chose a high school that allowed him to take a lot of time to devote himself to dancing and he spent all his time practising.
"It was a high school which put a lot of resources into job hunting and when there were things such as job interview training, I, all alone, danced so that it would become my job. I wasn’t that smart and there was really nothing but dancing in my head. That I can do something that I always enjoyed as my job, is a huge blessing."
"I want us to become a group that once we stand somewhere this place becomes our stage."
Out of the activities he has always enjoyed, what moment could be the most exciting one?
"It feels really good when I link the music with my movements. Also, when I dance on stage, I can see various things such as the fans looking at me or them holding boards saying they love (Shiroiwa) Ruki. This is fun. When I’m dancing, I’m imagining that there is another me above my head, watching and controlling me."
How much time has he invested in dancing, do that he was able to widen his perspective while dancing? Regarding him also making the most of his special perspective as the dance leader, he sincerely says “Everyone practises passionately, so I am helped by their power.”
JO1 made their debut in March 2020. This was just when the Corona pandemic started and they finally had their first lives with an audience in November last year. If he could freely choose, where would he like to dance?
"There is something impressive that the member Kawanishi Takumi has said. ‘It doesn’t matter where the venue is. It doesn’t matter if there is one person or 10.000 people in front of you. What you have to do stays the same. Just entertain the people in front of you.’ I relate to these amazing words, so I want to stand on all stages, from huge dome stages, to the ones of small live houses or until a platform in some park. If we stand there, it will be our stage. I want us to become such a group."
And, there are a lot of people he wants to show the best performance to.
"We are a group born from an audition program and we have quite a lot of fans since the moment of our debut, so we don’t want to disappoint these people, and we want to become a group who makes people who just got to know us wish they had known us longer. Exactly because of the fans, we can work hard and practise even in difficult times. I know it might sound like a cliche, but I want to give back (to the fans)."
JO1’s theme is “Go To The TOP”. They are aiming for the top of the world. If you keep on giving back, you will eventually reach your big dreams. Kawashiri-san’s words and dancing are something earnest that makes us believe in this.
Food report part:
Kawashiri turned to the camera after neatly dripping the boiled Jiaozi into the Chili oil when we shot the pose of him feeding the invisible partner. He understood the angle of the shooting and took care of the position of the glass. He is a considerate person.
He made an expression at the directions of the cameraman as if “your date partner was right in front of you” at the Taiwanese restaurant “also” in Hakusan. The staff was surprised by his beautiful sitting figure.
"Since the moment I entered the store, the smell of the spices that let you feel Taiwan made me hungry."
After politely saying “Itadakimasu” while putting his hands together, Kawashiri-san started to eat. “It’s spicy, juicy and really tasty!” was his high praise. As he likes to cook, he was immensely interested in the ingredients.
"The meat of the boiled Jiaozi is amazing! When you eat delicious meals, you end up involuntarily laughing, right?"
When he munched the hot boiled Jiaozi, he said “Freshly made boiled Jiaozi are on another level after all. After eating hot boiled Jiaozi, it's the best to cool your mouth with cold cola!” and in no time he cleaned his plate!
"Rather than too spicy, I like it piquant, so today’s Chili oil is the best! The boiled Jiaozi themselves were already delicious, but I prefer them with Chili oil."
Kawashiri-san said regarding the lone house that he suddenly saw in the back alley of Hakusan (Tokyo) “The outside was retro and lovely, but the inside was unexpectedly modern and chic.”
"It was a wonderful job where I could eat a lot of delicious things. Thank you very much."

Q5: Your recent hobby?
What could it be… what was it? Ah, there is something. It’s not something recent but ah.. how to say it? When I hear about the birthday of people I often meet like staff with who I work or the members, I note all the birthdays and I’m into collecting someone’s birthday for each day of the year. But I have just about 1/7 of those gathered so far so please tell me your birthday.
Q6: Is there something you would like to challenge in the future?
Something I would like to challenge… ah… I dunno whether I can do it but I would like to make the floor at home…. How do say it? If I had a day off, what would I do? Hm… Okinawa! I want to go to Okinawa. I was there only once, so I would like to finally go again.
Q10: A message to JAM
Lastly… JAM, how was my ASMR? It was also my first ASMR, I’m talking towards a microphone that looks like ears, so in the remaining time when I’m changing the ear, it’s changed for you, too? When I’m talking to the right ear it changes to your right ear. It’s fun, right? I have heard that this microphone is sold online, so I would like to buy it~
So, how was it? I’m always talking and laughing loudly, so I’m sorry if I couldn’t talk quietly and ended up being loud. But it was a lot of fun, so I hope to do it again. That was JO1 ASMR interview with Kawashiri Ren. Bye bye (3x)

π: Hello JO1 FC member JAM.
π¦: Hello.
π: 1…2…
π/π¦: GO TO THE TOP! We are JO1!
π: I’m Shiroiwa Ruki from JO1.
π¦: I’m Kawashiri Ren.
π: This time we are in charge of the 1:1 talk.
π¦: Let’s go!
π¦: We can do it relaxedly, right?
π: Are you sure?
π¦: π€£π€£π€£
π: Isn’t that good?
π¦: One day we are going to figure it out.
π: I think we will know it directly.
π¦: Yes.
π: Okay so… Please choose a team name for you in the beginning. Is there something you want the fans to call you?
π: I actually… I do not really have anything.I’m not particular about this. Everyone does…
π¦: Because Riderz was ignored?
π: This was! Really! We seriously decided on this! Sho-kun and I talked a lot about that behind the scenes and…We introduced it?
π¦: You did.
π: It took about 20 minutes only for no one to use it.
π¦: π€£π€£π€£
π: Since then I’m saying everything is fine.
π¦: Please call them as Riderz!
π: (??)
π¦: It was disbanded?
π: -nods-
π: Everyone, please call us what you want to. I will be happy about everything.
π¦: Well, let‘s make it in the style of an application.
π: Like an… application? Okay
π¦/π: in the style of an application
π: it is good
π¦: In the Twitter under the hashtag…which one?
π: Hm… Both RenRuki or RukiRen are also fine.
π¦: Yes yes
π: But we will officially decide on the most popular one under the hashtag that looks for the chemi name or team name.
π¦: okay.
π¦: Recruitment of RukiRen’s chemi name. Please suggest one on SNS under the hashtag of Recruitment of RukiRen’s chemi name.
(FC part)
π: This time it will be different.
π¦: so that’s it won’t be ignored?
π: We leave it to you.
π¦: We leave it to you.
π: You will think of it.
π: Well for our team name we made a tag for you.
π¦: We made one.
π: We will leave the choice to you.
π¦: Please decide on something cool.
π: Please.
(End of Twitter preview)
π: Next are the papers with the tasks.
π¦: yes.
π: Each one of us takes one and together we answer it. It has come. Please look over to Ren.
π¦: Okay.
π: oh. Your nails are cute.
π¦: Yes I changed my nail polish~ π€£
π: It’s cute.
π¦: Yesterday I played around with a pen.
π: Today was the fanmeeting…
π¦: yes. Eh?
π: not a fanmeeting.
π¦: no
π: the online talks and signing sessions.
π¦: It’s right after this.
π¦: Let’s start with this.
“Tell us 3 things you like about the other one.”
π: ooooh. Hm…
π¦: Is it okay to start directly?
π: Sure.
π¦: Face. I think everyone would say this. Face. Also, his hair doesn’t get damaged. I’m jealous of that. Really. Personally I’m really jealous. And the third thing is, he has less muscles than me.
π: π€£π€£π€£ this is what you like about me? Okay thank you very much.
π¦: That’s it.
π: Okay so… The first thing is. I’m also slim but Ren-kun is… it’s not in a bad way but your style is really good. Even when we wear our costumes, compared to the others, we are really slim and our silhouette might look similar. But even then his style is really good.
π¦: Really?
π It’s something eye-catching even from afar like at a live.
π¦: oooh.
π: This is the first one, but the second one is your presence. Your charisma.
π¦: wow
π: This is really amazing.
π¦: -shows off his nails- this.
π: Lastly, on the first glance you have a scary atmosphere and you seem cool but you laugh a lot and love to play around, the gap of you having a childish side. This is also charming. If we didn’t talk, you would be scary and chic… I would think you would stare at me and I would be afraid of you. But you have that gap!
π¦: ✌π»
π: I like this.
π¦: thank you very much.
π: okay so I go with this one.
When did you talk for the first time?
π: I think mine and Ren’s memory might be one…
π¦: yes. Let’s say the place on 3.
π: The place?
π¦: yes. If it’s the same… it’s that.
π: yes. If our memory is one, it’s that place. I think it could be that one
π¦: and I think it could be back then.
π: I wonder if it’s the same…1…2…3
π¦: At the training camp
π: the first was… we were not in sync besides the countdown. The first time was when we all sat on the chairs. It was before UN BACKER’s made their performance, we haven’t talked but greeted each other.
π¦: “Well done.”
π: yes. Originally, my teammates and Ren knew each other and they said “that’s Ren” but we didn’t talk. This was the first time I recognised him.
π¦: For me it was in the dorm of the Korean training camp of Produce.
π: In the 4 person room?
π¦: In the room of the 4 people, the one where Ruki was, it was too lively each night.
π: The Hanpuri room.
π¦: When I came around to have play?
π: I remember you often coming. A lot of people came, actually there were 4 people or 3 people rooms but at night around 10 people were in our room. And everyone was lively. Among them I saw him and in the middle of the night you laughed a lot.
π¦: you also rapped?
π: I did. I really fooled around.
π¦: You did.
π: It was fun.
π¦: that we talked was from then on
π: yes. That we properly talked and communicated was from then on.
π¦: So it was back in Produce. So nostalgic.
π: My first impression. Well I said so earlier, but you were scary.
π¦: eh?
π: And hence, just like I said earlier the feeling getting involved with him.. it was scary.
π¦: Me coming to you?
π: yes. But in reality it wasn’t like that. Rather you were really kind and we got to know each other pretty fast.
π¦: At first, I really thought “his face is so cool”.
π: Thanks.
π¦: and I said “Ruki is cool.”. So there was that presence of Ruki, but when I went to your room, you were out of control
π: I was.
π¦: I thought: he is such a person!? But that this Ruki does such funny things, the gap made you more interesting and it didn’t fit to my expectations, I ended up thinking this guy is interesting. That’s what I noticed there.
π: Ren-kun used to tell me that all the time, really, also after JO1 was formed “Ruki is really funny.”. And during the audition he kept on telling me how handsome my face is. All the time you told me that. Thank you.
π¦: Surprisingly, my impression of Ruki hasn’t changed.
π: Ah that makes me happy.
π¦: He is cool and funny.
π: Cool and handsome.
π¦: Someone cool and handsome.
π: Thank you.
π¦: That’s it.
π: So that we talked for the first time was in the room.
π¦: In the room. Yes. In Korea.
π: In the Korean training camp.
π¦: yes.
π: well, take the last one left.
π¦: I choose this one.
What do you want to do if you spend an off day together?
π: Unexpectedly, originally I well… didn’t go out with the members or gathered in the rooms with them.
π¦: yes.
π: That i went out with Ren was when I last went out when there was that wifi sign in the sky. Back then when you broke your bicycle by being too fast.
π¦: ahhh!
π: I was pretty much the last time. Also we went shopping but this was really short.
π¦: yes.
π: so that we went out together… back then.
π¦: I wonder how many people get the wifi sign in the clouds?
π: The ones who know it are long term FC members.
π¦: So nostalgic.
π: it could be the very first blog I wrote. And I took my first shot of you.
π¦: I was so fast
π: I remember that both your fans and my fans were happy about it.
π¦: That we truly went out together was just this?
π: it was funny and felt like youth. Going out to the supermarket with everyone at night, and going home while talking.
π¦: Pretty much everyone came along?
π: yes.
π¦: In my J-LOG I made accessory.
π: yes.
π¦: I bought the materials for this and made them at a cafe. Together with Sho-kun. The menu of the cafe was really delicious and the pizza was so good.
π: oh!
π¦: Because you like pizza,
π: It is my favourite food
π¦: I want to take you there.
π: Of course.
π¦: It was really delicious
π: That’s great.
π¦: So that we won’t get caught.
π: speaking of J-LOG, today at the talks I was asked that if I went again to see the illuminations of the J-LOG, who would I take with me? I had no time so I couldn’t answer but now I think I want to take Ren-kun with me to see the illuminations.
π¦: for real?
π: The winter, going to the cafe where I went to… like intertwining each one’s J-LOGs.
π¦: nice.
π: I want to go travelling.
π¦: The extended J-LOG
π: I want to shot the extended J-LOG.
π¦: Timewise, the illuminations are already over. So in the winter this year?
π: yes but the cafe is open all year. But each cafe is fine, for example an animal cafe is good, too, or a cute or fun one, I want to go there.
π¦: Let’s go on a free day.
π: Also, lastly, Ren do you like table tennis?
π¦: I really do!
π: I really like it.
π¦: I’m are really strong.
π/π¦: π€£π€£π€£π€£
π: You got me.
π¦: i’m are really strong. You would lose.
π: True. When we went to the coast, there was a place to play table tennis and I heard that rumor a lot that Ren-kun is strong and I also like table tennis, so I thought playing table tennis with him would be good, too. Not for content, I just want to play table tennis with you in private.
π¦: Because CEO is really good.
π: really?
π¦: yes.
π; That’s what you say.
π¦: He really is π€£
π: I want to move my body for something other than saving recently.
π¦: That’s good.
π: So I want to play table tennis.
π¦: Seems like you have made a plan?
π: Yes.
π¦: Okay.
π: I relaxed during new year, so I want to move my body again.
π: That’s it. We are still taking applications for our team name, so please suggest a lot.
π¦: there is still time to join.
π: This was today’s 1:1 talk. We don’t know who will be next but please look forward to them. Don’t forget to suggest a name. Bye bye
π¦: bye bye
π: we will meet soon again.
[JO1] Sunday Post 211219
Why did they wear each other's can badges at Open The Door?
Their first impression of each other
Letters they made for the program:
To the JAM who always support us,
How are you? Did you eat well? Are you not sick?
Thank you so much for always caring and looking out for me. Thanks to JAM, me and the members can enjoy our activities.
It’s been a while since I wrote a letter like this and it’s a little embarrassing, but when I write in my own handwriting, I feel like I'm more in touch with my feelings, or that I'm trying to deliver them properly, so I, the one who wrote it, is also happy. Because one who receives this will surely be happy, too, so I’m waiting for your reply. I’m writing this letter at an enjoyable schedule, but that I can write a letter at such an enjoyable schedule is thanks to you who always cheers for me. The members often say this, too, and we all feel that we can’t thank you enough. But we have a lot of gratitude and want to give back, so let me deliver that to you. Please continue to be at my side. Love you.
From Kawashiri Ren
How are you doing?
The winter has come and it is the season when the cold settles into your body. I feel some sadness seeing the leaves fall from the elegant trees. In the midst of this, I suddenly had a thought. It was when I was driving on the highway. When I opened the window and let the wind blow, I happened to see a magnificent building. At this moment I was deeply moved by the fact that we humans build that.
It might be something obvious, but the roads we walk on, the houses we live in, the buildings we look up to, everything was made by humans. I realized that we should not forget that our lives are made possible by someone else while we go on with our daily lives without thinking about anything.
I’m so thankful to the people who work outside even while I’m sleeping. Thank you very much.
In one’s life there might be more dreadful things, but I’m hoping that everyone can spend each day happily and joyfully. I will introduce you to something that might relax your heart a bit.
It’s the single “WANDERING” that was released on December 15. There are a lot of songs that are perfect for this season, so please listen to it if you like to.
Please continue to support us. Please take care of yourself.
Kawanishi Takumi
https://www.tfm.co.jp/post/index.php?catid=3595&itemid=183828
This time Kawashiri Ren and Kawanishi Takumi came to visit us. It was the first visit of JO1 since September 2020 when Kono Junki and Kimata Syoya visited us.
Uga: I think your year was busy, so what kind of year was it for JO1?
Ren: We did new jobs and were able to have various experiences… When we are active, we don’t know what is going on, the time just passes, but when looking back now, I think it might have been a year of growth for us, with only useful things happening.
Koyama: Based on this, how would you express this year in one word?
Ren:… Can I have 2 weeks (to think about this)?
Koyama & Uga: (laugh)
Takumi: For me it’s “eye”. The “eye”, just like the eye of a Taifun. Because it was a year that was spent as if we were in the eye of a taifun.
Koyama: Not the “ε°” (podium) of the Taifun, but the eye, right?
Ren: For me it’s “meeting”. In November we had our first live performances with audiences and it was the first time since we made our debut that we were able to directly meet JAM on stage. This was very memorable.
Uga: Right when you made your debut Covid came… like this right?
Ren: Our activities started with our debut single release event being cancelled.
Uga: It’s the thing you longed for, isn’t it? How was it? To meet (the fans) for real?
Ren: It was a lot of fun.
Takumi: It was fun. We sang and there were also the fans who cried. I was deeply moved.
Koyama: Not meeting you must have felt long for JAM, too.
Uga: The theme of this show is sending letters. Before today, we started to collect those, saying “please write a letter for these two.” Well… this much has come.
Ren & Takumi: eh!
Takumi: That’s a lot!
Uga: There was a deadline, but until now 328 ones have arrived.
Ren & Takumi: Thank you very much.
Uga: We have those, so please choose one and introduce it to us.
Koyama: Quite a lot of express letters have come, too.
Takumi: This one is cute! ‘I’m often fighting with my little sister. Do JO1 fight too? How do you reconcile afterwards? Tsubasa, 7 years old’
Uga: A 7 year old boy! His drawing is also very good!
Takumi: Thank you.
Uga: How is it? Do you fight?
Ren: After all there are conflicting opinions regarding our performances and we voice our opinions which don't go as far as fighting, but there are some.
Koyama: How do you reconcile and solve it?
Takumi: Rather than reconciling we don’t let it become bad. Because actually we say “isn’t this better?” “Isn’t that better?” in order to improve each other. We try to focus only on our good points… because it won’t get worse.
Koyama: So it’s a mutual agreement on the spot?
Uga: It’s like a debate, fighting with your opinions.
Ren: That’s right!
Takumi: From this point on I will try to conclude it. It’s important to not drag it out. But it might be difficult for the 7 year old Tsubasa-kun… (laughs)
Uga: Please share your message for Tsubasa-kun.
Takumi: I have an older brother. We used to fight, too, back then. It’s something normal I guess. But since it’s your little sister, please be kind to her.
During the broadcast Kawashiri-san and Kawanishi-san read a lot of letters. In the letters there were questions such as “Why did you wear each other’s can badges on your encore outfit at OPEN THE DOOR?” or “How do you keep your motivation during hard times?”.
Uga: Today you received a lot of letters, but until now which was the most memorable letter that you wrote or received?
Takumi: I played baseball from elementary to high school, but before my last match in high school I received my first letter from my father. “Thank you so much for the fun you have given me until now.” This letter made me really happy.
Koyama: Oh! Did you win the match?
Takumi: I lost!
Uga: How about you, Kawashiri-san?
Ren: In my case, I got a letter from Santa when I was in elementary school. We were 4 boys, and on Christmas Eve together with my mother we decided “Let’s bake cookies for Santa!” and made those. Santa could eat them when he brought the gifts. When I woke up the next day, Santa had eaten them and left a letter. In this letter he wrote “Look for___!” and we looked (for the gifts) at a lot of places and it was an entertaining Santa who came. This is something I still remember vividly.
Koyama: What was the gift?
Ren: The toy I wanted to have back then.
Uga: What a nice story.
Furthermore, Kawashiri-san and Kawanishi-san wrote a letter, addressed to “the person you want to write to right now”. Kawashiri-san wrote “to JAM who always support us” and Kawanishi-san “to the people who build buildings”… It was a letter filled with gratitude to people working.
Koyama: I expected that you two would surely write a love letter to each other (laughs)
Takumi: This would be a little embarrassing, so I couldn’t do it (laughs).
Koyama: But what you have in common is gratitude. I felt that you both always do your work while being thankful to everyone.
Uga: Do you have a goal or an ambition for next year?
Ren: The lives in November were originally planned as a tour, but due to the influence of covid we were only able to perform in Tokyo. We are thankful for this, but this is one frustrating thing, so in order to be able to see all the JAM who support us from afar, we are working hard to do so.
Takumi: I think I will be the happiest if I could spend the year happily and healthily without any injuries or illness.
Koyama: Out of the 11 JO1 members, 4 members have come so far. I hope the other 7 members will visit, too.
