1 year has passed since the debut. Was there something that made you feel that you’ve grown? What could it be? If I had to choose something, I might be very nervous in such times… without realising I became like that. When we appear on programs, I’m thinking a lot about what the first person would say. However, now I’m not thinking too much and enjoy it.
How is it as a group? We became closer! We got along from the start, but by working together and experiencing hard times (because of covid), so I feel that our bonds deepened naturally.
When I watched the surprise event for Mamehara Issei's high school graduation (found on the official YouTube channel), I thought “they get along so well” and I felt soft. (Laughs) At my own graduation ceremony I came with jeans. (Laughs)
It's the middle of 2nd season of PRODUCE 101 JAPAN, but do the members talk about it? We talk about it a lot and I think everyone might be watching it. For example during practise, we dance to the theme song.
Recently, there are a lot of media which noticed the performance power of you and JO1. During the airing of “Numa ni hamatte kiite mita” where you appeared some days ago, “#Ren-kun’s treatment” entered the twitter trends. That’s right. I work hard to align the dancing. By being featured and paying attention to the uniformed dance, it was reconfirmed to us that this is our “weapon”. I feel that the consciousness not to forget the individuality and to align the parts that need to be aligned has become stronger. I would be happy if you continue to pay attention to my “treatment”.
Is there something you keep in mind while teaching the members? I keep in mind to use the fitting teaching style for that member. There are members who are good with the way I say it when everyone is there and there are members who are good with what I say in secret when it’s 1:1. There are for example members who prefer me using sound effects like “it’s not don but ban” (laughs) “what would you say to someone who has never danced before?” it might feel like that. That’s what is transmitted the most, isn’t it?
Among all the songs is there a choreography that felt difficult? The song “Speed of Light” from “CHALLENGER” is a powerful song that has a dashing feeling. The person who was in charge of the choreography was a dancer we worked with for the first time. It might be also because it was the first time and it was really difficult. It’s delicate but also powerful. Because it’s such hard choreography that with just dancing it once you will breathe hard. We are doing this with our all, hoping that our seriousness or passion can be conveyed.
Now, I would like to ask something a bit private. It seems like you moved recently? How is your living area? It’s really good!
Please tell us about something that you are particular about when moving such as the interior. I have a lot of things, so I’m particular about storage! When I moved I bought things like a bed with drawers, a tv rack, shelves, and a really huge wardrobe. On the contrary, our leader Sho-kun doesn’t have much. It’s a simple and neat room that has only drawers under his bed and a desk. I often go to have fun in Sho-kun’s room, but some time ago he came into mine. Then he said “so small!” (Laughs) it was wide enough for me, but Sho-kun lives in a wide and neat room, so I felt like that I have a lot of things (laughs)
Among the members it’s common to visit each other? We quite do that. Normally, everyone gathers in the leader’s room, but some time ago, the rare thing that 5, 6 people gathered in Shosei’s room happened. Around midnight Sho-kun played the guitar and everyone sang together. Next, above and under the room there were also members, so we quickly closed the window.
I’ve heard you like to boil Broccoli. In the previous interview you talked about cooking, but has your repertoire increased since then? Recently, I’m into boiling broccoli, but I’m making it together with chicken ham. I’m cooking chicken breast at a low temperature to make ham, but it’s really delicious (laughs) I make ham, boil broccoli and change the sauce depending on my mood of the day. Chicken breasts have a dry image but the chicken ham I make is tender! Sho-kun and Junki have also eaten it and they liked it.
Please release the receipt on YouTube (laughs) next, I would like to ask about lives. First, please tell us about the streaming concert in February. To sum it up, it was fun. I learned anew that you can make lives with various components like bands or video footage. The most important thing was that the people who watched it enjoyed it, but it was fun for us, too.
You announced that you will finally go on tour in winter. Is there something you want to do on tour? The details like the setlist and songs haven’t been decided yet, we will decide that soon. A live is only one time and there isn’t the same live twice, so I would like to make each live a No.1 live.
Please tell us about your enthusiasm for the tour. We already did some online lives, but it will be the first time to have a solo live in front of an actual audience. I would like to have a live that will be the best memory for both the audience and the members!
Next I would like to ask about the 3rd single. First, please tell us your recommended song. I can recommend all of them, but of course it’s the title track “Born to be wild”.
I think there is a link to the thoughts of JO1 who just broke into their second year in the lyrics of “Born to Be Wild”. There is the phrase “Key of new world” which appears often in it and in the MV there are a lot of things that imitate keys or key holes. What is the “key” for you? I think it’s the 11 members coming together. It’s my own interpretation of the MV, but everyone is kept at each one’s places and rooms. our leader Sho-kun makes the key and gives it to Junki… then, when 11 members gather, the big door opens and the view suddenly opens… and we go into an unknown world. So, I think “That’s something that can’t happen if the 11 members don’t gather?”
Connected to the single title, what do you want to challenge in the future? Woah~, there is a lot, but well… There are some members who learn how to write lyrics and music including me. Creating a song for us by those members. Making choreography by the members who can do that. A live performance that we thought of… I have the ambition to produce one of our songs.
Please tell us about the point of the choreography for “Born to be wild”! Just like the title, it’s wild. We go vroom vroom like a joke engine and it’s the vroom vroom dance like Kawanishi Takumi named it. Also, the choreography point is the expressed power to enter into the world.
I watched the costume version in which you dance in police uniforms on YouTube. Who was the one who thought of that? Ah, that was someone from the company (laughs) we had no idea what to wear to dance, so it felt like a surprise on that day. We were also excited about what we would wear and went “what could it be-?” and it was police.
In the comment section there was a storm of praise for your dancing that mastered the handcuffs and the baton. Really? I’m happy (laughs) I practised that in my free time (laughs) everyone threw it around too much (laughs) I think it broke (laughs)
Finally, please leave a message for the readers! First of all, thank you for reading until here. We JO1 will continue to always be “CHALLENGER” in everything also in our 2nd and 3rd year and we will continue to carry out activities so that you can feel our powerful potential, so please continue to support us.
