First, right after the debut due COVID-19 “self restrain” had become unavoidable. How did you spend the self restrain period? Personally speaking, I started to practise the piano and cooked. If we speak of the group, we did remote lessons with our Korean trainers for the 2nd single.
What kind of meals did you make? I love to make taco rice! By the way, I made and ate that yesterday, too.
Are you good at cooking? Yes, I can make meals without looking at the recipes.
What was the occasion that made you start practising the piano? Originally, I was interested in DTM (a computer program to make music). Because you make music by connecting a keyboard to your computer, I thought about buying one. It’s still a long way to go, I can only make some sounds. More than becoming able to play music, I want to become able to write songs.
You spend the time perfectly. You challenged making jam and soap on JO1’s official YouTube channel. Who had decided on that? When the manager, the members and the staff talked about what we can do and can’t do during this time, we wanted to upload something on YouTube! First, we decided to make the jam videos. Because our fans are called JAM.
Did you eat the jam after making it? Yes! It was delicious. I tasted the other member’s ones too lol
Whose one was the best? Hm... the best was Takumi I think. But personally speaking, Sukai’s one was super delicious!
Such videos that show that gap of you and the performing you, was received well by the fans. What do you want to do next? This year because of COVID-19, we weren’t able to do anything summer-ish. That’s why I want to go to a river and do typical summer things... lol
Next, I want to talk about the 2nd single STARGAZER. The lead track OH-EH-OH was composed by Pentagon’s Hui, right? You were a back dancer for that group before your debut, weren’t you? When you realised that Hui participated in a song you song yourself, what did you think? I was happy. When we listened to demo when we started practising, I thought “wow that guy sings well”, I didn’t realise it was Hui. When I heard that Hui wrote it during the recording... I wondered whether it was alright to get such a reward. Because when I was a dancer, I couldn’t imagine that, so I think I’m lucky.
That are also center for this song this time made it even more meaningful, right? Yes, I’m delighted.
Let’s talk next about the MV that became a talk. Your role was “dark Ren” became a hot topic. I remember that when I watched the MV I thought “eh? That’s Kawashiri?” Lol it seems like that got a lot of attention. It was my first time acting but... it was as much as it was difficult. When I looked at the monitor after shooting and repeated it, I discovered a lot of things. It was fun doing this while thinking “If I do it like that, this is visible.” or “that direction is good”.
Regarding “dark Ren”, fans have a lot of theories, but can you give us some “hints” before the release of the MV? A hint... lol The concept of "OH-EH-OH" is "a support song to send to troubled teenagers who deal with anxiety and conflicts". “Dark Ren” represents those worries and conflicts. It's a MV with a message that 11 people will overcome such conflicts, so I hope you can look forward to it.'
I can’t wait for the MV! There are expressions in the lyrics like such as "dazzling light" and "shining light" that help you in a situation when you are confused by a new road. But for you, is there a person or an event that helped with your dream? My mother. She often told me “It’s your life, so do what you want.”. Thanks to those words, I was able to chase my dreams and I became my current me. Those words supported me a lot.
Your mother is surely happy about your activities. All together there are 6 songs on STARGAZER. Which is your favourite song among those? Wah- I like all songs.. yeah. Well it’s OH-EH-OH. I like it because it is the song with the deepest message and I can feel it while listening to the song.
Speaking of JO1, after all “dance” is a topic. Is there anything you want to point out regarding the choreography? There is the “jacket dance” in the hook of OH-EH-OH. Because this time we have a student concept, we perform while wearing student like costumes. I want people to watch out for the dance where we use the jacket. Also, there is a rap part. It’s powerful or rather suddenly the manliness increases, so I think that there is also power included into the dance. I secretly support that, too.
