Ren Kawashiri

The performance leader with dance skills of a genius!
He is an ambitious hard worker in whose heart a blue flame is burning while he is surrounded by a gentle soothing aura.

Something that you are number 1 at among the members?
Competitiveness! I like to make everything a game and contest while having fun.

A JO1 song that fits perfectly to you?
OASIS. I think there are moments when you are exhausted, worried or you want to stand still, but in such times I hope I can be the source of healing and cheer for someone.

Your favorite item that you have bought recently?
A foamer for skin care! It can make finer bubbles than the net and the condition of my skin has become better, so I recommend it!

Something recent you were so absorbed into that you forgot the time?
Song writing. I’m still in the middle of learning, but I’m working hard so that one day a self-written song will be featured on an album!

If you had some time now, what would you like to do?
I happened to experience the charms of camping food, so I would like to go camping.

The hairstyle you want to try next?
I would like to go back to a light hair color or something flashy. Like neon green (laughs)

What do you do when you feel down?
If a huge obstacle appears in front of you, it’s okay to overcome it, it’s okay to take a detour, it’s okay to open a hole… It’s important (to remember) that there are various ways. There are geniuses everywhere, right? I’ve been dancing for more than 10 years, but for example if there is someone better than me, well, I will try to beat them in singing. Exactly because I’m not a genius myself, I keep in mind to polish my other weapons.

Something recently that made you want to praise yourself?
I’m not oversleeping anymore! Thanks to my Apple Watch (laughs)

A trait that makes you think someone is wonderful?
People who have kindness, people who have calmness, people whose stance and behaviour are neat. Among the JO1 members it might apply the most to Ruki. When we are together I calm down.

What do you want people to pay attention to during your performances?
To get into the song. Because I think it’s important that when you understand what you want to convey and make others feel and you try to deliver it in a way it makes people think it’s wonderful.

With whom do you want to make a dance collaboration?
There are a lot of people, but if I had to name someone, it is Kimura Masaya from our younger brother group “INI”. When we were dancers, we had danced together, but since I became someone who stands in the spotlight, it wasn’t possible anymore, so I would like to make this happen.

Something you keep in mind when making a choreography?
Which sound is the most “visible”. Because our work is seen by a lot of people, I often feel that a lot of people are watching. With my interpretation that it’s better to pick up a sound that you feel you understand, I keep in mind to take up the sound that can catch the listeners the best.

Your favorite song among the ones featured on the new single “WANDERING?”
It’s “OASIS”. Dreamy is the right word for it and as the title suggests, it’s a kind of mysterious song about finding peace in a difficult environment. Mame sings the lively part of the last chorus, but it matches the song, and it’s my favorite point!

What are the members for you?
We are one.

A message to the (self declared?) sub leader Kimata Syoya!
I think Syoya’s spontaneous energy leads the members, so please continue to eat a lot of sushi and stay healthy (laughs)

The highlight of the double lead tracks of the new single “WANDERING”?
In “Prologue” there is the message “it’s also okay to pause and stand still, so let’s move forward together” and I think it’s a song that also people who don’t know JO1 can relate to. The song is used as the ending song for TV Tokyo’s “BORUTO - NARUTO NEXT GENERATION-“ anime and I was so happy when I heard about that. So much that I made a countdown until the announcement day! (Laughs)

The leader role you are in charge of?
As the performance leader improving the performance is a given, but other than that, I imagine our roles as that Junki takes up the front and leads everyone, I take the middle and connect everyone and Sho-kun supports everyone from behind.

How have you been helped by the members?
The members who often help me are Ruki, Junki and Syoya. They did help me so far, but I think they are getting more experienced and they understand the means, and they support me a lot, saying “if there is something we can do”. Especially Ruki, since before he helps me by learning the choreo at the same time as I do, so… he is indeed a prince.

Something that was hard and difficult for you as a leader?
When thinking of “performance”, you think of singing and dancing at first, but for example how you take up comments or when you talk at tv programs, you could call that a performance and that’s still underdeveloped so it is the task for the future!

JAM’s love is huge and they are really amazing. Each time we do some action, they give us even more support back and in various ways they exceed our passion… This enthusiasm and power is amazing, so it feels like JO1 and JAM are competing who is more passionate! (laughs)

Ren x Junki
Q: If you gave yourself a unit name?
Ren: [Pi] Me and Junki are the exact opposites, so if we put our powers together we can see the full scale… like that we are like Pi!.
Junki: [Rival] Because we always end up lighting each other’s fighting spirit no matter whether it’s in stupid discussions or games (laughs)

Q: Something that is similar?
Both: Competitiveness!

Q: If you were classmates at school?
Ren: Just like now! But I feel like we would go to a school where everyone lives in a dorm and when at night everyone gathers, it feels like a class trip and we just talk without being productive (laughs).
Junki: I would be team red and Ren team blue and we would battle (laughs) Our way of attacking is absolutely different. Ren acts after calmly analysing everything, but I go with an overwhelming power and liven everything up with my voice. The result is… I win (laughs)

Q: What is a new side of the other one that you have discovered recently?
Ren: When I feel that Junki would think of something as 'funny!' and says something, his nose wiggles (laughs)
Junki: He seems calm and quite stubborn… I wonder if I can make him upset (laughs) When I said that, I hoped that it would shock Ren-kun and won’t say anything, but it's true! It is the first time, and I think he was really angry (laughs)

Q: What is something you admire of the other one?
Ren: The power of his lungs. Junki, Syoya and I bought a gadget to increase the capacity of our lungs, but Junki continues using it and he even brings it to work which is amazing.
Junki: His precise and beautiful dancing and his passionate side. His dancing captures every sound and beat on point which touches me! Also, he is surprisingly passionate. His words “If you want to enjoy it, you have to be good at it” follow that and I cherish those in my heart.

Q: One thing you want the other one to stop?
Ren: His steps are so loud! (laughs)
Junki: Nothing in particular, but he would be cooler if he stopped being too humble!

Q: If you had a day off, what would you like to do together?
Ren: Shopping at a second hand clothes store and going to eat yakiniku.
Junki: I would like to go clothes shopping. I’m not really materialistic, but if I went with Ren-kun I might buy a lot saying “I don’t want to lose in the buying amount!”( laughs)

Q: Words of appreciation for the other one?
Ren: Thank you for always. You help me. Since there are 3 leaders and also 11 members, please always tell me when you are exhausted (embarrassed)
Junki: Your so-called treatment work that you do in order to uniform the choreo of the performances, has become JO1’s routine and I think it's a hard job for you, so I really want to tell you thank you for always (doing this).

Sho x Ren

Q: If you gave yourself a unit name?
Sho: [Design] Because we both like to design clothes.
Ren: [1961] My member colour is blue and Sho-kun’s one is green and they feel earth-like, so something related to that is good. What I recently found out was that the Apollo project and the Project Mohole seemed to have taken place at the same time in 1961, so I choose 1961.

Q: Something that is similar?
Sho: Our mental attitude when entering the entertainment world. We both didn’t enter it on an early stage, and also because of our age, so I think we both always lived with a feeling of tension. Furthermore, our calm side might be also similar.
Ren: I like weird general goods that other people might not need, but Sho-kun is the same. Sho-kun, you have made that, right? The denim jacket he has bought and on which “OKINAWA NAHA CITY” is written. When he wears it with pride I think he is cool.

Q: If you were classmates at school?
Sho: Ren likes table games, so we would have fun playing cards!
Ren: He would be someone who would assist me a lot! For example in sports, rather than doing it himself, we would pass the ball to me or Junki.

Q: What is a new side of the other one that you have discovered recently?
Sho: He has a lot of stuff in his room! Ah, might be since before.. (laughs)
Ren: He doesn’t like high places.

Q: What is something you admire of the other one?
Sho: Generally speaking, that he is stoic and his attitude of confronting everything seriously.
Ren: That he can focus himself on one single thing.

Q: One thing you want the other one to stop?
Sho: Just like Junki, he comes into my room without permission! (laughs)
Ren: That he ends up turning himself off when he is tired.

Q: If you exchanged bodies?
Sho:I think I would dance the whole time. I want to taste that feeling!
Ren: I work out and see the pumped up macho body!

Q: Words of appreciation for the other one?
Sho: Thank you for always diligently teaching the dancing to everyone.
Ren: Since you are the oldest member and the leader, the times when you are taken care off might be few compared to the other members, but when you are exhausted please rely on the second oldest one, me!
