I want to convey my gratitude to QWV by giving 120% in performances

The popular boy group “OWV” released their 5th single “You” under the concept of “beginnings” on March 9. In reference to the title track “You”, which depicts the beginning of a new season and new feelings, we asked them about “You” as “rival”, “admiration” and “fans”, as well as “I” (=oneself). The 4th one is the hardest worker among the members, Sano Fumiya, who supports the group’s performances with this flexible and graceful dancing.

I always wanted to see a different scenery… so my rivals are tall people!

Who comes to your mind when you hear the word “rival”?
My rival… hm… (quite troubled and silent)

Honda-kun answered himself.
So common, that’s what old men would say. That you are your own rival. A lot of them say this! (laughs) Hm.. my rival (asks a staff member “Who is my rival?” for help, but ends up getting teased by “Eh, maybe a parkour athlete? (laughs)”...) Okay, I decided on one. My rival is everyone who is taller than me. I want to see everything from a higher point! In the case of the members, it’s Urano and Nakagawa. They have their faces at a quite high spot, so I guess they get less oxygen than me? I’m always comparing us like this.

My body is ready, but me and the sea or pools don’t get along…

Who comes to your mind when you hear the word “admiration”?
Admiration… Who could that be… (asks the staff again “Who is the one I admire?” and again he is teased with “A parkour athlete”...) The ones I admire are… Professional swimmers! Everyone who can swim. This is because I can’t even swim 25 meters (laughs). Once I get into the water, I sink. If I get invited to the sea or to some pool, I will come! I have faith in my muscles because I always did some sport. Still, I can’t swim at all (laughs) That’s so ridiculous, isn’t it? I placed first in the fitness test of my prefecture, so everyone around me saw me as this kind of person, but when I step into the water I just sink to the bottom (laughs) It’s such an embarrassing school memory.

“Performing with 120% until the end” This is how I give back to QWV

Next is about “You” in the meaning of the fans. Please tell us about a feeling or an episode regarding the fans.
When we went outside of Tokyo to shoot our variety program “OWV Road”, there were people asking “Are you OWV?” or “My daughter is a fan”. I was thankful there were people knowing us, too! We made our debut during the Corona pandemic, a situation in which you can’t easily meet the fans, and along with this there weren’t many opportunities to actually feel that people know our names, so I was happy, thinking “Ah, we are known”.
OWV has only 4 members, so my impression is that a lot of fans watch over as if we were family members. Our leader Honda-kun is a passionate guy, so I guess he attracts passionate fans? We have well divided characters: the moodmaker, the passionate leader, the handsome one and the cool one. People often call me the cool one, but when I’m with the members, I’m actually as hyper as our moodmaker Urano (laughs)

Lastly, we would like to ask about I = your current self. Please tell us about your growth and tasks that you experience in your daily life and how you look at the future.
In regard to performances, I would like to be more agile or rather, I want to be the one who leads the group more than one else. This is my strength. Even if we get more songs with a high difficulty and everyone gets exhausted, even if I get older and less fit, I will still push to the very end. I’m not a man of many words, but performing with 120%, will my all until the end is my way for giving back. That’s my way of conveying my gratitude and I’m always tackling the stage with all my power. I want to keep going like this.
As OWV’s Sano Fumiya, well… The other 3 members are all dependable A types. I’m the only B-type, so I hope to be the special force captain who presses forward when the other 3 members are too cautious to move forward.

I have always been a poor talker… but you will understand me if you see me dancing.

Please tell us about your recommendation and your favourite part of the single.
I think it’s better to say that we are “whirling” this time instead of the usual OWV typical smashing kind of dancing. I hope to lead in regard to dancing, so I worked on it to a great detail. I kept in mind not just to have powerful but also graceful expressions.
In regard to singing, Honda-kun and I, as the main dancers, often sang the verses or bridges since the debut, but this time I’m in charge of some key parts such as the pre-chorus and the background improvisations in the chorus. I feel we are getting closer to being a group in which everyone can sing and dance.
We start the lead track “You” in a formation in which I’m hanging my head while I’m in the center alone when the other 3 gather, I awake. It is an important part since I have to tell a story just by my expression when I raise my head. If I made a grimace at that moment it would be seen as such a song and if I made a weird face people would assume it’s a funny song (laughs). I tried my best since I was in charge of such a key point, so please check it out. I communicate with my dancing since I have always been a poor talker. Dancing is talking. I’m the type of person who thinks that you can understand everything about me when you see me dancing (laughs).

Were there any memorable events or small incidents during the creation process of the 5th single?
The sleeves of my blue main costumes are quite wide, similar to what you see in traditional Chinese clothing. There is a part of the choreography in which I raise my arm high up and everyone else raises their fingers along it, but this was a huge struggle in practise. I wanted to put my fingers out of the sleeve, but the sleeves are just too wide so it didn’t work out at all! There is also the small incident that others were so focused on the choreography that they didn’t notice how they accidentally got into my sleeves (laughs). The slightly awkward atmosphere turned into a funny story by now.
