OWV’s Nakagawa Katsunari reveals the risky item he brought for the first time in his life this fall!

The boy group OWV who gathered attention in the popular audition show “PRODUCE 101 JAPAN" released their 1st album “CHASER” on October 13th! In reference to the title of the album, we interview them with the keyword “Chase”. This time it’s the turn of Nakagawa Katsunari.

NAKAGAWA KATSUNARI
Born 1997.3.16, 24 years old. He is an allrounder who charms with his smooth rapping and vocals. He is 183cm tall and his handsome face is full of glamour. He is the healing character whose calm personality puts his surroundings at ease.

Please tell us what you have been chasing recently.
What I’m chasing recently is the fashion I want to wear in fall and winter. I like to dress in luxurious, sleek and stylish ways like our costumes! However normally, I prefer big silhouette clothes in a more relaxed manner. This fall and winter, I especially would like to collect a lot of hoodies. Aren’t they convenient? You can pull together a look just by wearing one. What I bought recently… ah, a rugger shirt! Sorry, it’s not a hoodie (laughs). My skin tone is dark, so I wore nothing but black clothes until now. But by wearing various styles through work, I thought that I should try wearing other colors, too. I bought blue clothes, maybe for the first time since I was born. A blue and black rugger shirt. I saw the long shirt that Honda-kun who was with me bought, so I decided to take the leap and bought one, too. The design is really cute, so I hope I can pull it off.

What is your recommended point that you think of as “no one should be able to catch up here” of the 1st album?
For this album there are 3 cover designs. The costumes for the FC edition are quite colorful with me wearing purple pants, Shuta a green jacket, Fumiya a jacket with colourful fur sleeves and Honda-kun orange & pink. I really like that each one of us can pull off such strong colors in our very own ways and yet the four of us are together as a whole. Regarding the costumes, thankfully the member’s opinions are considered. We also want to express OWV’s essence with the costumes, so once more we carefully exchanged opinions with the production side. For example, the tuxedo of the main visuals was born from the exchange of our opinions - the request from the production side “we want to make it look like an anniversary” and (us saying) “a normal tuxedo isn’t enough to express the essence of OWV, right?”. We added a leather cummerbund that gives off a bit of an aggressive atmosphere, and the design around the neck expresses each member’s own “essence”. We put a lot of thought into each costume, so I hope you enjoy those, too!

On the other hand, was there anything in the process of making the 1st album that made you think “Oh no, I’m chased by this…?”
During recording, we first do a trial recording and then it’s said “this is better” or “That’s better” and then we adjust it. However this time, when I heard the trial recording, I was shocked by how good Honda-kun and Fumiya sounded together. I was inspired that “... I have to do my best, too. I have to do it more coolly”. The main vocalist Shuta is of course very good at singing and I’m always chasing him. I always feel that I want to catch up with him. My approach to the lyrics and the tracks is to try out various ways to use my voice and how to take up the rhythms. record this, adjust… and repeat. I want to bring out good music, so I’m steadily working hard.

Please tell us about a small incident in the process of making the album.
When we had some free time during Honda-kun’s shot, Fumiya, Shuta and I discovered an arm that had fallen off from one of the mannequins at the shooting side. We thought that if we hide the hand and put the mannequin’s arm into the sleeve… and then drop it, it will look like the arm has indeed fallen off?, so Shuta started to practise this. In order to surprise Honda-kun, we carefully practised a lot of times and when Honda-kun finally came Shuta started to play his role in high spirits… At least I thought so, but for some reason Shuta did something completely different in his actual performance, so the atmosphere became complicated… This was the only unusual incident in a relatively smooth MV shooting (laughs).

OWV has uploaded various contents in the one year since the debut. Please tell us your recommended content for new QWVs who want to chase OWV from now on. Since my school days I've been told that just by judging by my appearance I seem cool and hard to talk to. In reality I’m just at first shy and frank once we get along. I want to recommend content that makes you understand this. At first I hope they will watch the artist side of us, like our MVs and live videos, but as the next step I want them to check the video “激辛料理にチャレンジ！～食べきってライブ成功祈願～” (Literal translation: Challenging super spicy dishes! ~Eat it and pray for the success of the concerts~) from OWV’s official YouTube channel. I like spicy food, but I’m not good with too spicy things. In this video you can see me being in agony because it’s too spicy, but if you saw that I think you can understand what kind of person I am (laughs).
